Influences – Answer Code Request

If you asked me to choose one producer who always inspires me, then it has to be Richard D. James. He’s the biggest influence on my productions. To take a quote from the man himself – “It sounds really arrogant, but my music’s my favourite music ever. I prefer it to anyone else’s.” I guess being obsessed with your own music is what makes him that brilliant.

This track was first released in 1992 and was re-pressed in 2006. The simple yet warm synth melody with the bass kicking in right in the middle of the track makes it so groovy and harmonious. A major influence on my first EP ‘ACR 01’.

With the delay effect added as a layer, this classic is good to go on my DJ set as a closing track. I remember that I nailed two copies at the time I bought it. I get goosebumps all over whenever I play this, it gives me a good feeling.

‘Palace Posy’ is one of my favorite tracks from the last Boards of Canada’s album, enchanting and soothing. It feels perfect with this track after a long day in the studio, a gig or simply to relax.

This track begins with an arpeggio of bells ringing in sequence and followed by a distorted drum beat. I love how Shed works with the arrangement of the track and it’s title is dedicated to his favorite record store, ‘Hardwax’. 44a (hardwax forever!) was released under his second album on Ostgut Ton and is also one of the best album in my collection.

I discovered this video from the 29nov film that was made for ‘Burial – Street Halo’. It’s a dark and futuristic animated film that lasts around 10 minutes and was produced by Wolfram Gruß about a special janitor in the future who was responsible for day and night on behalf of God. What I find fascinating about this short film was that it had no dialogue and symbolizes metaphors from themes such as sociology, religion and modern life.

One of the first and most influential films with the movie soundtrack from Vangelis. A cult film at that time with the visual design of cyberpunk genres. Science fiction and horror films are among my influences and ‘Blade Runner’ had a big atmospheric and visual impact on me.

‘Mass Transit Railway’ is an ambient track into space instead of a train journey, I feel. Wieland Samolak made a special appearance with his synthesizer solo which made this track very dreamy and endless. Monolake is one of the IDM producers I respect the most.

When I start with the production of my tracks, I often listen to ‘Karmacoma’ on repeat. It’s like a chant to me, with guest artist Tricky lending his vocals for the rap part. ‘Take a walk, Take a rest, Taste the rest’, turned out to be such a earworm.

The entire Porter Ricks album Biokinetics 2 shows how deep techno can be. You can hear how dark and hypnotic it is, like my tracks are. With this track I feel like I’m running into a thick fog, getting lost and not knowing what to expect next.
