Raul Saaramets is not a name well known… However, it should be.

The Estonian musician, digger, disc jockey, instrumentalist, radio programmer, drummer and beyond has been a prominent figure within underground music for many years now with connections reaching far and wide. His interest in sound runs deep and he is well respected across a variety of musical spheres. He has worked as a punk/rock drummer and a rock artist as a member of a respectable local group Röövel Ööbik and as a radio programmer at Raadio 2 in Estonia.

Beyond this he has also played a pivotal role in experimental electronic music within the country as a promoter, club programmer and dj. He has released music on the likes of Jon Rust's Levels alongside Andrevski, Porridge Bullet / Pudru Kuul and Umblu. His edits have been remarkably popular and have been championed on dancefloors the world over.

He is set to release a new EP on Red Rack Em's Bergerac before the end of the year. We invited him to pick influences…

Soft Machine - Soft Space (1978)

I only found about this piece some years ago. Never been too much into Soft Machine, more of a Yes and early Floyd man but this is great – techno from 1978.

  • A Guy Called Gerald - Alita's Dream (Re-Issue)

The whole Black Secret Technology album is pure magic. One of my all time favorite LPs. I met Gerald when he came to Estonia and did a one hour long interview with him for my radio show. Strangely I can’t remember anything we talked about hah…

  • David Bowie - Look Back In Anger (Official Video)

From the best Bowie album Lodger. Great tacky video as well, like it was made in Estonian TV in the 80s. Listened to a lot of Bowie when I was a kid.

  • Public Image Ltd.- Memories

Second Edition is not only one of the greatest albums ever, it was also the first time I realised I wanna make music too. Picked up a guitar and ended up as a drummer. Everything here is amazing but especially Keith Leven’s exceptional guitar playing. I don’t think anybody played guitar like this before. Lydon became rather annoying later on though. Throbbing Gristle’s 20 Jazz Funk Greats was another trigger for me to start making music.

  • Cabaret Voltaire - Kino

Almost everything Cabaret Voltaire did was ace. Even when they went house they were still sinister. I wish there were more artists who don’t give a shit about the audience. Everybody is so bloody pleasing and nice. I have all their albums.

  • The Fall - Fit And Working Again

No other artist have given me more pleasure that The Fall. I’m the biggest The Fall fan. I named my son after Mark E Smith 32 years ago.

  • Mk - Mkapella

Early 90s deep house favorite introduced to me by mighty Rhythm Doctor. Big tune at Mutant Disco.

  • Sound Waves - I Wanna Feel The Music (Smooth Mix)

This another Mutant Disco classic. This kind of early 90s deep house will never get old at our house.

  • Neil Landstrumm - "Field Preaching"

The sort of a music we used to play at early raves with Aivar Tõnso here in Tallinn in mouldy old town cellars. Sounds a bit medieval too.

  • Omar Souleyman - Heli Yuweli (Rezzett Rerezz)

Here’s something new. By my pals Rezzett who influence me the most these days.
