Adrian Sherwood – Influences

Music

Adrian Sherwood is a don. With over 30 years of experience, he's one of the most knowledgeable men in the business – and, as it turns out, a good bloke to boot. As well as creating one of the UK's most consistant dub factories with the On-U Sound label, he's worked with everyone from Lee Scratch Perry to Primal Scream to Depeche Mode. The recent Sherwood at the Controls compilation was a revelation, showing how Sherwood's ability to run post punk, industrial and off kilter disco through his dubwise filter had created a back catalogue rich with dance floor innovation. Currently he's set up a partnership with Bristol dubstep favourite Pinch, with the two of them set to play a live show at Koko on June 13th alongside Congo Natty and DJ Krust (more details on that here)

Today, Adrian picks us a selection of heavy dubs and wild cards – don't even think of listening to this lot without a sub plugged in…

Sherwood At The Controls Volume 1: 1979 – 1984 is out now vie On-U Sound.

See Sherwood & Pinch at London's Koko on 13th June, more information here.

Mikey Dread/The Clash - One More Dub

From the album Sandanista, a great Mikey Dread mix of a classic song that is very relevant right now in today’s political climate.

  • Jah Wobble Dreadlock Don't Deal In Wedlock 1978

A hilarious tune, used to have it on 12″. Great cover and a nice mix.

  • London Underground - Current Affairs

    An all-time personal favourite.

  • The Ruts - Jah War

From the album The Crack, this is a stand up tune. Great dub mix and a haunting guitar hook, plus Gary Barnacle on sax. What more do you want?

  • London Calling (Roots Rock Version) (Feat. Don Lettis)

The don paying homage to the Clash classic in a roots style. Great version.

  • Revolutionary Dub Warriors - Ease Up

Steve Swan and the lads were On-U stablemates. Great live band, sorely missed.

  • Young Boy

A twist on the original tune, Ari warns of the approaches of young boys in the dance. Great dancehall here from Medusa, R.I.P.

  • Barry Adamson 007

Pure brilliance this. A great concept and original to the core. Love it.

  • Freq Nasty Boomba Clat Feat Roots Manuva & Yolanda

Great breakbeat with a hypnotising voodoo doctor type vocal from Manuva. All killer, no filler.
