8 Tracks: Unsound & Misshaped With Quimper

Music

We like wonky. When someone describes themselves or their music as wonky we here at Ransom Note would believe that to be a term of endearment. Who wants perfect and polished anyway?

Quimper introduced themselves to us as such and their musical narrative aligns itself with that which is the very ethos of our publication. They have just released a new EP titled "Midnight Snack", an intriguing record with an array of influences.

We caught up with them as they deliver eight tracks.

Associates - Nude Spoons

A hysteric kamikaze dive of a song that probably doesn’t make much sense but that doesn’t really matter. Billy Mackenzie was a glorious lunatic and Sulk era Associates were pretty much the best band in the world.

  • Sensational Alex Harvey Band: Faith Healer @ Togwt 20/12/73

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band at their menacing best, a front man that looks like he’s about to stab the entire audience one by one backed up by a psychotic Pierrot clown on guitar.

  • Nina Hagen - Naturträne * Toppop

There’s just something about using a classically trained operatic voice as a weapon of mass destruction. This is Nina Hagen at something approaching vague sanity, but only vaguely.

  • Mylene Farmer Maman A Tort

A tale of forbidden love in a mental asylum hidden under a synth-pop rock of relative normality. Quite unsettling even without the video. Very unsettling with.

  • Indians In Moscow - Naughty Miranda

There really should be more pop songs about cannibalising your father but it’s sadly a topic that seems to only really be explored via death metal rather than synth-pop and it just isn’t the same.

  • Null And Void - Un Sedatif Ce Soir

A monotone cry of “I SAW GOD IN A GAY BAR” gives way to a swirling demented mess of a disco stomp backed up by something dangerous and dirty. The kind of song where you feel you need a good scrub after listening to it.

  • Graeme Miller & Steve Shill - The Moomins Theme

It’s a strange and beautiful little song that turns a wholesome 80’s children’s television programme into something a bit sinister.

  • Ledernacken - 'Ich Will Dich Essen' - German Industrial Dance/Jazz

Turns out there *are* more synth-pop songs about cannibalism. Fantastic bass synth, people wrapped in toilet paper, what more could you want?
