8 Tracks: Of Slovenian Electronica, Funk & Jazz With Ichisan

Music

In the mid to late noughties Ichisan decided that he'd had enough of photography, at least for a little while anyway. He decided to embrace music and developed a passion for the new wave of disco music which was sweeping its way across Europe at the time. He became a champion of a modern take on dance music which was bringing the funk back to the floor. His music has been championed by the likes of Prins Thomas, Bjorn Torske and Pete Herbert.

This month will see him release his debut album on the dancefloor focussed record label Bordello A Parigi. In honour of this it seemed like a fitting time to catch up with a man who has been very much in demand since he first entered the scene back in 2008.

Originating from Slovenia he guides us through the local musical roots which led him to where he is now.

Videosex - Neonska Reklama 2

Videosex was a popular synthpop group back in the 80s. This boogie track named “Neon light” has been a great influence for many beginners, starting their own electronic music adventure.

I love this amazing Jazz/Rock, Fusion album from 1979. The song Florida is dedicated to the band’s flight to perform in the USA.

I admire the funky bass-line together with delicate vocals of this beautiful cover from Simon & Garfunkel – Scarborough Fair. Recorded in 1971.
Pepel In Kri - Pesem Za Dinar

The Eurovision song represented by Yugoslavia in 1975 reminds me of my childhood. It inspired me to make a cover on my collaboration album Ichisan and Nakova in 2010.
Boomerang - Na Zapadu Ništa Novo

Yugoslavian classic from the 80s. Edited by Maelstrom in 2009 and released on Mindless Boogie Records from Belgium.
Jože Privšek - Križanke 73

Joze Privsek was one of the most acclaimed Slovene jazz and pop musicians. He was a pianist, a composer and a conductor. It is a must to listen to some big band music here and there.
Maskarada (1971)

Masquerade 1971, is the most “illegal” Slovene movie of all time. Directed by Bostjan Hladnik, the movie was banned over decade of it’s explicit scenes. The music was written by the great Slovene composer Bojan Adamic.
