8 Tracks: Of Intimate Minimalism With Kerri Lebon

Music

"More is less. Less is more. The eye is a menace to clear sight. The laying bare of oneself is obscene. Art begins with the getting rid of nature." – Ad Reinhardt

Based in San Francisco, Kerri LeBon is a DJ, artist, designer and creator of Bay Area club night Discipline. Her mixes and productions have been released on the likes of Silent Servant, Jealous God and Traxx's Nation imprint.

In a rare chance to catch her in London, she's playing New River Studios this Friday alongside Autumns and Carl ClanDestine. As likely to draw from EBM and techno as she is early industrial, Kerri's DJ sets are not for the faint-hearted and certainly not to be missed.

Kerri has put together an 8 Tracks selection for us, "compiled to illustrate [her] passion for sparse, yet impactful music." From New Order and Alan Vega to Coil and Eliane Radigue, listen below:

Kerri LeBon plays New River Studios on 10th March with Autumns [Live] and Carl ClanDestine. Tickets available here.

Dz Lectric & Anton Shield - Experimenting Love

Humid synth line, naive lyrics, androgynous vocal delivery… perfectly offset by a punching (Linn?) drum. One of my favourite tracks reissued by Minimal Wave.

  • Dz Lectric & Anton Shield - Experimenting Love

Humid synth line, naive lyrics, androgynous vocal delivery… perfectly offset by a punching (Linn?) drum. One of my favourite tracks reissued by Minimal Wave.

  • Hallucinator - Black Angel

I can never get enough Basic Channel/Chain Reaction. Edward George, Anna Piva and Trevor Mathison’s cyclical productions were restrained, melancholic and elegant… where are they now??

  • Vainio/Väisänen/Vega - Baby Lips

Suicide and Pan Sonic are huge for me, and the “Endless” album is my favourite of the two Vega collaboration records. This track is sexy, deceptively minimal, and powerful.

  • Christiane F - Health Dub

Christiane is a fascinating person, unapologetic about her transgressive, storied life. I love her cool, detached vocals and the shambolic-yet-rhythmic nature (provided by Alexander Hacke and FM Einheit) of this track. A standout for me from the Geniale Dilittanten period.

  • New Order - In A Lonely Place

The sound of breaking through loss. It was surreal to be able to play it in my set for the Jealous God showcase at last year’s Berlin Atonal… a funeral celebration of sorts. “How I wish you were here with me now…”

  • Coil - S Is For Sleep

Sparse and perfect, with some of my favourite lyrics from Balance. I think the rhythm is taken from a preset on the Casio SK-1; I was given one as a child, and still have it.

  • Church Of Raism - Night Scar

Jarring one-off experimental project for Creation comprising members of Felt and Primal Scream, with lead vocals on this track from Rose McDowall, one of my favourite artists. The interpolation of noisy washes, and her beautiful voice, sound singular here.

  • Eliane Radigue - Transamorem - Transmortem

This is a favourite piece among the focused drone work of Radigue. Immersive and uniquely harsh.
