8 Tracks For Setting Up – Lo Shea

Music

This new idea of themed 8 Tracks continues this week thanks to Lo Shea. After pushing for a theme to the selection, this was the response we got;

'I chose 8 tracks which I regularly play as I'm 'setting up' the Hope Works venue before the party starts. The music isn't necessarily what you hear at Hope Works, but each track speaks to me and informs what I'm doing there…' – Lo Shea.

So, here are '8 Tracks for Setting Up'…

Lo Shea's 'Distance' LP is out now on CD and digital and he's just released his Adverse Camber EP with Phonica White.

Q-Tip - Breathe And Stop

From the game changing album “Amplified” this beat really shook things up.Very original at the time, its influence could be heard for years after in the broken beat scene. This is the one tho…it sets me alight even today…Jay Dee helps create he perfect base for one of my all time favourite rhymers…the man from Tribe…the guy with “that” tone…Q-Tip.

  • Journey In Satchindananda

From literally one of the most incredible albums I’ve ever heard, – “Journey To Satchinananda”. Intensely high music…free…fearless…beautiful and makes me feel I’m home. Next level stuff this.

  • Petre Inspirescu - Sakadat

My kinda playful music this. Groovy, twisted n trippy. Such a good head bending timbale/snare mashup. Just an immense record. I booked Petre to play Downlo @ Dan Sane (a club I ran with my partner at the time)…he was great….didn’t play this tho! Gutted!

  • Moderat -- New Error (Official Hd)

Moderat blew my mind when I first saw them in 2009 at Sonar. This piece of music is something that I dearly love, along with all their music…. They are modern masters of electronic music. This is sublime.

  • Duke Ellington "Brasilliance"

Duke Ellington’s suites are a constant marvel to me, this album is the densest, most intense assimilation of latin american culture ever swallowed and spat back out by a jazz orchestra. You can seriously get lost in this piece… I’d love to have seen this done live… It’s fierce…not coffee table jazz….and while I understand it may not be for everyone… I absolutely don’t care….its just masterful. Dense, wild, and fearless.

  • Dillinja - Ja Know Ya Big

A lesson in Amen work, and delivered with proper style. Got it all for me, Dub, Jazz n funk. Dillinja the don. Used to play in mid-late 90’s at NY SUSHI where I was resident. Total smasher.

  • Galaxy - War (1977)

War have one of my all time most rated rhythm sections from the 70’s jazz/funk/latin groups…so tight…and this track is such a party starting killer. It just doesn’t date…and I dare you not to move when this track is played…. It’s just wonderful.

  • John Lee Hooker: Boom Boom

I love blues music, and Hooker is one of my total favourites. He’s got THE deepest, grittiest, best voice ever. How can a man tapping his feet and playing an out of tune guitar sound so irresistible? God knows…but I can’t get enough of the guy. I think Seasick Steve wouldn’t be what he is without John Lee…;)
