zimmerman vs Dmx boxing match cancelled

Boxing’s a strange game, but even amidst the circus of the sport, the recent news that rapper DMX was to challenge George Zimmerman to 12 rounds in the ring was bizarre beyond belief.

Zimmerman is, of course, infamous for the fatal shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin – an incident for which he was cleared amid great fury within the African American community who viewed the case as a white wash and the killing as racially motivated.

DMX and Zimmerman were due to fight on 1st March, with DMX having spent the last few weeks making statements such as: I am going to beat the living f**k out him. I am breaking every rule in boxing to make sure I f**k him right up“.

DMX has fought a very public battle with cocaine addiction and mental health problems, and the idea of him stepping into a ring with a man hated for literally getting away with murder appeared to be hugely ill judged.

Damon Feldman, promoter of the boxing match, made a statement yesterday saying the match was now ‘cancelled’, saying Zimmerman was ‘the wrong person to put in a the ring and define celebrity boxing‘. You don’t say.
