Simon Reynolds Next Book Is A History Of Glam Rock…

Music

Simon Reynolds is justifiably known as one of Britain's premiere music writers. His book Energy Flash remains one of the best introductions to the ever mutating UK rave scene on the 90s, whilst Rip It Up And Start Again, his round up of the post-punk music of his youth, is an exhustive and addictive travel through the 80s avant garde sounds that laid the foundation for that rave scene to occur.

Reynolds' next work comes as something of a surprise. Shock & Awe; Glam Rock & It's Legacy is being billed by publishers Faber & Faber as "the first complete history of Glam Rock," with Reynolds exploring "this most decadent of genres on both sides of the Atlantic. Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Alice Cooper, The Sweet, Gary Glitter, New York Dolls, Sparks, Slade, Suzi Quatro, Cockney Rebel, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Mott The Hoople — all are represented here."

Running through glam's 70s heyday to a closing chapter dealing with the modern status of the music (including Bowie's death, Lady Gaga, and glam in hip hop), the book may not be what we were expecting from Reynolds- it's certain to be illuminating none-the-less. Release date is currently scheduled for October 6th.
