Rotation Soundsystem and Campo warmup action from Rose Robinson aka Tigerbalm…

Rose Robinson, emerged in the early 1990s, where rubbing Tiger Balm on one’s temples was a customary way to extend a chemically-induced high. Now returning in human form, Tigerbalm, hailing from  south London, has been a professional DJ many years, renowned for her eclectic sound blending African, Latin, and global influences with modern electronic music. Formerly one half of Earthboogie, she’s now pursuing a solo career under the moniker Tigerbalm, signing with Ubiquity and set to release her debut album “International Love Affair” in 2022.

With a slew of remixes and collaborations under her belt, Tigerbalm is a bussssssseeee, bringing her global looking sound to audiences worldwide. This summer you can catch her at the most excellent intimate affairs that are Rotation Soundsytem and Campo Sancho. She also has a sterling remix of Pahua’s Palanté ft. Acid Coco on Razor N’ Tape out today too.

Mix action and a dive into the mind of Tigerbalm below… Friday sunshine, let’s go!

Please introduce yourself…

Who are you…

I’m Rose Robinson aka Tigerbalm

Where are you

In my studio in Hackney Wick finishing off an Emperor Machine Remix (out on Leng Records this summer) Can’t wait to play it at Rotation Festival because its a dirty French cosmic disco banger…!

And what are you

Female Artist working as a Full time Music Producer & DJ

What does your music sound like?

My Tigerbalm sound is best described as colorful World Dance Music… i fuse global influences such as Afro, Latin, Brazilian, Italo, Eastern & tropical world sounds with disco & cosmic grooves.

How does your brain work when making music?  How does it work when you aren’t?

I’m normally imaging where i wanna play what i’m making so i can manifest that energy into the track. I approach my life this way also, visualising what i want to achieve across all circumstances…if you can see it then it can happen…

What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel? Charlie- Spacer Women…it made me feel intergalactic

Where was the mix recorded?

I recorded the mix at my apartment in Hackney

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

It would be hot…Taking a boat in Rio de Janiero, Brazil during carnival or Playing at a sweaty warehouse party

What should we be wearing?

Eccentric & Sassy, minimal clothing, color, 80’s vibe

What would be your dream setting to record a mix:

I would be high up with a view somewhere in a mountain or maybe suspended ever the jungle at sunset. I would be playing on a quadraphonic sound system with speakers in each corner – 360 surround sound…sunsets across the set…i’d play USB set

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Pahua- Palanté ft. Acid Coco (Tigerbalm Remix) because i played it tonnes on my South American Tour Jan/ Feb…I have amazing memories associated and really enjoyed making this remix. It’s out across streaming platforms today.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I used to be obsessed with Valerie Collective (Synth Wave) and listened to them on repeat but now i always want to hear new music and never really have time to listen to a mix more than once.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Frankie Knuckles in NYC late 70’s at Paradise Garage. The real birth of dance music. When i read Love Saves The Day by Tim Lawrence i was thinking exactly this- how incredible it would be to play alongside him

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
I started with a pioneer 800 mixer and 2 CDJ’s when i was 19 years old – i used to have house parties at uni

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

For me it’s the first track…it’s what sets the tone for whats ahead…

What were the first and last records you bought?

First Record i bought was Peter Richard- Walking in the Neon…Last record i bought was Belpaese 05 (Belpaese Edits) just last week

If it was an animal what would it be?

Tiger

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Everything can be mixed! You just have to know the songs and where to sneak it in! Latin/ Soca can be hard though…

Am I going to my dream job?

Yes, i’m so passionate about making music and performing

Am I being compensated fairly for the value I bring to my job?

Most of the time

Do I feel energised, rested, and confident?

Yes i feel confident and energized…not always rested working in nightlife!

You just had a fight with the person you are closest to. do you not speak to them until they apologise…or do you apologise first?

Alway voice the truth and be accountable so apologies. No games…

If you were trapped on a desert island with one other person, who would you choose? how long would it be before you eat them?

haha i wouldn’t eat anyone – i’d rather starve. I guess i would bring my favorite squeeze of the moment haha

Your doctor says you need more exercise….what do you take up for exercise?

I’m a regular at Tennis, Hot Yoga and Blok Clapton so i kick my ass regularly…i’d love to take up/ try squash though…

If you could travel in time…where in time would you go? why?

oufff i honestly always wanted to experience a Beatles gig in the 60’s so something like that! Flower Power haha

Upcoming in the world of…

This summer i’m really excited to be playing some great UK Festivals including Rotation Festival, Campo Sancho & Wild Wood Disco also stayed tuned for two more remix’s i’m finishing for Nickodemus & Emperor Machine
