The More Rice co-founder steps up to show us how it’s done.

Sarayu is a key figure amidst the Bangkok underground and remains pivotal in the progression of the scene. As the co founder of More Rice records he has been pivotal in releasing music from locals and broadening the reach of music from Thailand. He works tirelessly and also produces his own music alongside involvement in Bar Temp and Bangkok Community Radio.

He keeps busy.

This mix demonstrates his prowess as a DJ and what a mix it is.

Weaving between different variations of house music, this one is perfect for the hot, sticky summer and is packed with feel good moments and deep groves galore.

Big vibes. Listen and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I’m Sarayu or Jay, I am the co-founder of More Rice Records & Record Store, Bar Temp. And Bangkok Community Radio in Bangkok, Thailand. I also play music.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Lots of things mixed together, random, in between house and techno. Dodgy mixing at times.

Where was the mix recorded?

In my very comfortable Bangkok Studio one afternoon.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

My favourite place to listen to a mix – on a back of a motorbike taxi in Bangkok, but don’t do it right now it’s rainy season, you might get drenched.

What should we be wearing?

Anything really, but the colour combination has to be from the book “A Dictionary of Colour Combinations” by Sanzo Wanda (either vol. 1 or 2 is fine).

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

I quite like my studio & my set up.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Vinalog – Pattern 1, but most of them are my favourites otherwise they won’t be on there, dusty ones, nostalgic ones, new ones.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

https://soundcloud.com/edbangerrecords/justicexmasmix

Justice’s Christmas Mix, I think it was a rejected Fabric Mix, so they just released it as a Christmas Mix.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Maybe Erol Alkan? Some of the first parties I went to were Durrr, Bugged Out and of course his parties Trash at The End in London. Part of the reason I wanted to DJ was because of the parties from this era.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

First set up:

2x Pioneer CDJ 100s & some Vestax mixer, I’m not sure of the model.

Now:

2x Technics 1200s MK5, 2x Pioneer XDJ 1000 & Allen & Heath One 62

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Depends on the setting, time slot, venue blah blah bla. But, both and every track in between.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First one I dont remember but my earliest memory I guess was Francoise K. –  FK-EP on Waves, It was bought at Music & Video Exchange in Notting Hill.

Last one was: Trybet – Mood Setter.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Hot toast with butter and Marmite on top.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A dog, specifically a Russian Toy Terrier, even more specifically my friend’s dog Vito. Described by the owner as: small, quick and annoying, but if you study it pretty awesome individual.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Nothing is impossible, listen to the Justice Xmas Mix.

Upcoming in the world of…

My next EP out on my label More Rice on 15th Aug 2025 – The Don. Mueang. & plenty more release towards the end of the year.

Anything else we need to discuss?

I don’t like beansprouts & thanks for having me, been a dream.
