Olive T: The Ransom Note Mix

Music

Let's get weird on a Friday as we invite the wonderful Olive T from the mean streets of New York City to contribute to a special edition of the Ransom Note Mix series. A fine selector she has contributed with style to the likes of the Truants mix series and Discwoman. She has also established herself as a firm presence on the airwaves with appearances on the likes of Radar Radio, Brooklyn Radio and more. Her tastes are far reaching and her musical presentation can feature anything from house to hip hop, jazz to techno, funk, soul, disco and beyond. A true dj and an aspiration in the booth this one is worth strapping in for…

Listen and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

Hey everybody i'm Olive T in Brooklyn, NY right now. I'm a Gemini and a DJ and a producer.

Where was the mix recorded?

I recorded the mix in my studio/bedroom

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

I highly suggest listening to the mix on a long train or car ride while coming back from vacation/holiday.

What should we be wearing?

Loose clothing preferably made of linen and cotton.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix?

I would like to record a mix in an empty studio with top of the line speakers and gear, for sure.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Well that is a tough one. I will say I've enjoyed Santiago Salazar's – October for quite some time.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Oh I would've like to go back to back with Spencer Kincy -just to be around him and grasp his musical influences

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

My first set up was a in the box, belt drive Gemini DJ starter kit. Now I have 2 really old Numark direct drives and low end cdjs with a Pioneer mixer that was gifted to me.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track I start on is the most important because it sets the tone for the entire mix

If we were in NY for the weekend, where would you take us?

I would take anyone to eat whatever food they desired, because NY has it all. Oh and Coney Island just for the experience

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

It would taste like a butter cream frosted angel food cake

If it was an animal what would it be?

It would be a chameleon

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Ah let's just say I own a small amount of hardcore crust punk records that can truly never be mixed into anything  -well

Upcoming in the world of Olive T?

Catch me Djing all around NY for the rest of the summer! August 4th @Mood Ring, August 11th @Elsewhere roof w/Le Youth, and AUgust 24th @Nowadays w/Ash Lauryn & Turtle Bugg

Anything else we need to discuss?

I feel like a lot has been covered!
