Music

Nyra’s musical output connects all his formative influences.

After catching the music bug as a youngster through this mum’s record collection, the Sheffield-born DJ and producer went on to properly cut his teeth as a DJ and promoter in the steel city.

Having immersed himself in his hometown’s rich musical legacy, he felt motivated to start his own party Downlo back in 2008 which became a pitstop for artists like Ben UFO, Steffi and Efdemin, in turn helping put the city on the underground dance music map.

He then made the move down to his current home base of London, after which he really found his stride with production, releasing music and remixes for Domino, Secretsundaze and, more recently, for Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant label.

The move was the catalyst to launch his own imprint too. Canoe gave Nyra free reign to share everything he’d been working on, from house, techno and breakbeat to synth-laced dance floor workouts, all tied together by a palpable sense of euphoria.

It’s a feeling that extends to his DJ sets too, especially as a resident for London-based queer party Adonis. In fact, you can hear for yourselves on today’s mix which was recorded live at one of the club nights last year. From classic to deep, vocal and hip – it’s house music in its many forms and it’s gonna put a smile on your face.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

Hi I’m Nyra, I’m a DJ/Producer from Sheffield now living in London.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

I think my music sounds like a Smiley Face 🙂

Where was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded live and taken from my show at Adonis on the 20/08/22

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

I think its a perfect soundtrack to a sunrise set at The Garden Croatia

What should we be wearing?

SWIM ATTIRE REQUIRED 🩲👙💦

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

On the International’s Space Station with a function One Sound System and a bunch of Aliens keeping it intergalactic.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

My favourite track is Mr Roy – Something About You

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Armand Van Helden’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix from 21/01/1996

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

I’d have to say Tony De Vit as I think our tunes would compliment each other well and create a night to remember.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

When I was around the age of 16 my uncle passed and he left me a little bit of money, so I went and purchased a Stanton Dj package which consisted of two vinyl turntables and a 2 channel mixer. I then set it up on a wobbly table in my bedroom and hooked it up to my Hifi system and taught myself to mix.
Nowadays I use two Technics 1200/1210 turntables, three Pioneer Cdj 3000/2000 and a variety of mixers ranging from the Allen and heath Xone 96 to the Pioneer V10 and Rotary mixers when available.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track you end on is defiantly more important as that’s what the people remember after the party has finished.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first record I bought was a white label of a Madonna track from Reflex Records in Sheffield, some house bootleg if I remember rightly. The last record I purchased was Zebrano by Benedek, I really nice album with a nod to the 80’s.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

It would have to be a Wham Bar

If it was an animal what would it be?

Bird of paradise

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

It’s has to be Kinky Toys – Carpe Diem, I’ve searched for a good copy for some time, but cannot find one, it jumps all over the place.

Upcoming in the world of Nyra…

I will be releasing six more Canoe eps throughout the year which takes me to my 20th release on the label in October and a big 20th release party as-well as taking Canoe on tour and finishing in ADE, alongside continuing my Adonis residency.

I also have some great shows and remixes in the pipeline for this this year and lots more to come.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Whats going on with the pollution in UK rivers? It’s tragic.
