Molly: The Ransom Note Mix

The French electronic music scene is ever changing, it never tends to stand still for too long. However, there are several key faces and figures who make it rather special in the sense that they continue to do their thing, unphased, unchanged over time. From this they have forged fully fledged careers, often with a special sense of expertise in style and genre.

Molly is perhaps one of the defining pioneers of this era of French musicians. 

As the founder of Récit de Voyage she has championed a wave of new producers who have taken things deeper than before, focussing on dense moody soundscapes and the tightly tuned fundamentals of dance music. Some call it minimal, some call it micro house, some call it tech house. In all honesty that doesn't matter, what it does do is captivate dancefloors through powerful, emotionally provocative energy which allows dancers to lose themselves in a transient, heads down state which is simply stunning to experience and observe. 

Molly has herself released music via the likes of Giegling, Groovement, RDV Music and Aku. She is one of the tightest dj's around and we are delighted to be able to feature her as part of this series.

Please introduce yourself… 

My name is Molly (Emeline), I'm a French Producer & Dj, who now lives between Barcelona & Corsica.

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I’m in Corsica, doing my quarantine like almost everybody else on the planet.

What does your music sound like?

It sounds mainly like house & techno with lots of diverse influences, from Pop to Breaks, Funk, Jazz, etc…

Where was the mix recorded?

At home…

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

The ideal setting is a bit complicated to achieve but it would be underwater.

What should we be wearing?

A swimming suit or naked?

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Sunset time, with a beautiful point of view, somewhere high and the view of the mountains or the sea… Only silence and animals around, a pair of turntables and my vinyl, a 5h set, minimum …

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Pepe Bradock for roof.fm The kind of mix that you always listen to with a nice glass of wine.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Larry Levan!!!!! The time of the Paradise Garage, Studio 54… people were on fire. People were dancing and partying for the music…The time of the greatest Disco & House Hits…The way people were dressing up, it was a high level!

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

My first Dj set up was 2 Gemini turntables, PT 1000, direct drive, with a Gemini mixer (Ps-626). Now I have 2 Technics MK2's, 2 Cdj 2000's and a DJR400 mixer.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track i end on. It’s the last track that people have in mind…

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first one was "Beat it" from Michael Jackson and the last one was the new Omar S album.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A Matcha ice cream!

If it was an animal what would it be?

A horse.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

There are many but I would say Overide's "Situation Vacant"
