Lurid Music – The Ransom Note Mix

Music

"Whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent."

Lurid Music is a label founded by Alex Hobson and Dimitris Kyvellos of Kasseta Record Shop in Athens, Greece. They are about to release their excellent second release by the Rattler Proxy. We like it. We asked them to record their R$N Mix mandate…

And we chatted to them too to find out more… here it is:

You're pretty new on our radar, tell us a little bit about yourselves Who are you and where are you from?

We are Alex and Dimitris, based in Athens, Greece. We've known each other from way back when and spun music together most of that time. We recently started a record label. We're calling it Lurid Music. Dimitris owns Kasseta Record Shop downtown.

Who would you say are your biggest influences and what are you hoping to achieve with your music?

Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian", bourbon whiskey and the AWI 4000 session on Just Jam are just three of our biggest influences. The Idjut Boys too.

What were your original aspirations for Lurid? How do you think you're shaping up?

Just original music other people might find challenging and enticing.

Where was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded in one take at Kasseta Record Shop in Athens, using two turntables and a mixer, in front of a small in-store crowd.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Hunched over a bartop, nursing a Sombra mezcal straight up.

What should we be wearing…

Pants around your knees, plastic bag on your head. (pic taken outside Kasseta Record Shop)

(picture removed at the behest of the guy who's arse was out in it. )

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Bronze Teeth "Albion Pressure" on Diagonal

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Sasha & Digweed "Northern Exposure"

Junior Vasquez "This Is The Sound Of Tribal UK"

DJ Food "Blech II"

DJ Harvey "Sarcastic Disco"

Rub N Tug "Better With A Spoonful of Leather"

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

DJ Harvey hands down, the man's a legend. Alex actually named his dog after him.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Two warping belt-drive turntables back then, one of them was a Realistic, with a shoddy Radio Shack type mixer with some laser effects on it. Now it's a couple of SL1200s and a Rane Empath Rotary.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track you start with, sets the tone and people might still be sober to take it all in.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Dimitris: First record I bought was Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's "Step Off" 7" – the last record I got was Bronze Teeth's "A Waif's Rent", Alex got it for me.

Alex: My godfather got me my first record, it was Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut" – I was thrilled they used the f-word in one of the tracks. The last record I bought was the Silent Servant / Broken English Club split twelve on Cititrax.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Hot spinach & artichoke dip with nachos.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A donkey. Many women have referred to us as jackasses.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything…

Alex: James Last "Good Morning Starshine" that beat always trips me up. Or maybe my copy's all fucked up.

Favourite track of the year so far?

The Rattler Proxy – Death Machine "Jokers Of The Scene Remix"

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?

Big in Japan.

Upcoming in the world of Lurid Music…
