Kiwi – Ears Exclusive VINYL – ONLYMix & lowdown

Music
It's been a busy year for London DJ/producer Kiwi. It was his Days of Being Wild release that pricked up our ears…  he's also reworked the likes of Is Tropical and When Saints Go Machine alongside upcoming for Yumi and the Weather, Lolo, Du Tonc, Tronik Youth, Club Bizarre and Horixon (Kitsune) remixes.
Here's a little vinyl-only mixtape Mr Kiwi did for us, warts n' all…

Please introduce yourself

Hi I'm Alex Warren/Kiwi

Who are you:

A boy from Shropshire, trying to make his way in the world, having as much fun as possible.

Where are you:

In my house, Denmark Hill, South London.

What are you:

A DJ/Producer/Lad..?

Where was the mix recorded?

I recorded it at home, usually I dont like to do that, I like to just give people live recordings of my club sets. But due to the nature of it being a vinyl-only Disco mix. I had to to do it a home.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

A disco? A house party, the library, a bus, anywhere really. Its all fun music!

?What should we be wearing?

Your birthday suit, crank up the heating and listen to it naked, people dont spend enough time naked.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format.

Thats an interesting question, it would have to be a party, DJing to an empty room is actually quite difficult, I'D much rather be playing to a room full of people. Maybe a house party. One of those Carlsberg jobbies where everything is really awesome. Red light, hot girls, dudes in animal costumes, a vodka fountain that sort of thing.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
I dont really have favourites they all do a different job. Was a while ago now. Ive been hammering Sharon Brown Specialize in Love recently – can't remember if I put it in the mix or not.

Whats your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I can't call it my favourite of all time, there's too many but I got to hand it to Larry Levan for all of the Paradise Garage recordings.

Theres also a few epic DJ Harvey mixes that I could have chosen.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

DJ Harvey, he has an infectious energy about him. He obviously LOVES sharing music, it would be an honour to play with him.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

HAHAAAA this is embarrassing I had virtual DJ and a terrible Behringer midi-controller. But I didnt learn properly until I got my hands on a pair of CDJs. Now I have a pair of 1210s, pioneer 2000s and a DJM900 mixer.

Whats more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
I'd have to say the track you start on, its important to capture the crowd, because if you dont your last track maybe for you and the sound engineer, once you have the crowd you can get away with anything. The track you end on is the one they will remember though.

What were the first and last records you bought?
First was Blur Great Escape

And I just bought The Clark Sisters You Brought the Sunshine Into My Life from Rat Records in Camberwell today.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Kiwi fruits duuuuhhhh đŸ˜‰

If it was an animal what would it be?

A kiwi bird? Sorry, Captain obvious.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything
Ha there's quite a few, but it doesnt stop me trying! Was listening to this earlier, may be a bit difficult/ crowd splitter.

Ive dropped this a couple of times

Whats upcoming in the world of Kiwi?

I have a EP out in a few weeks on Sneaky, which I'm really excited about, its a collaboration with my good friend Ashworth, its a bit deeper than what people are used to from me, more of a later night vibe, some may even describe it as sophisticated. Then a bunch of remixes on there way and a load more really exciting stuff in the pipeline that I can't talk about. But im super excited for 2014!

Anything else we need to discuss?

Gigs? Its the last ever DURRR this Saturday + Im really excited to play The Hydra/Bugged Out for New Years Eve.
