dogheadsurigeri: The ‘Wednesday Alternative’ Mix

Music

Continuing our appreciation of the fertile music scenes throughout Central Eastern Europe, for this week’s Wednesday Alternative mix we welcome The Netherlands-via-Poland DJ dogheadsurigeri.

A lover of snacks (particularly the fried kind), when she’s not digging for french fries and Ben and Jerry’s, you can find her hunting down off kilter rhythms and high-powered club tracks, consistently championing the unconventional and the surprising.

This channels into her work as co-founder of the MESTIÇO crew, who have been working to redefine music and club culture over the last four years, while she also helps challenge the narrative as part of the Oramics collective – alongside DJs like Monster, Avtomat and ISNT – who help support women, non-binary and LGBTQ+ communities and encourage participation within music.

We hand over the controls to her and, in true Scorpio style, she produces a impulsive, dynamic no-holds-barred mix of furious techno, hi-NRG breaks and deconstructed club rhythms… Don’t forget your seatbelt!

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

Aye, dogheadsurigeri here. I’m a Polish DJ currently living in The Hague, where I am at this moment. I co-created the MESTIÇO crew, which for the last four years has been trying to redefine music and club culture. Since 2018 I’ve been a member of Oramics – an initiative that supports the participation of women, non-binary people and the LGBTQ+ community in the clubbing scene. I’m a Scorpio.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

The music I play sounds like tangled cables under a desk.

Where was the mix recorded?

Partly in Warsaw, where I spent some of my summer holiday and partly in The Hague.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

I would recommend a gym session, riding a bike or any type of workout really. On the way to the club would be also good but please wear a facemask.

What should we be wearing?

Feel sexy and attractive. Wear your best club outfit.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix:

Spacious room filled with snacks. I like french fries, fried cheese and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Also lots of coca-cola cans.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Distal – Jaws of Deltoy (Aquarian 2014 Edit)

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

PAN w/ Tzusing & M.E.S.H. 28th January 2019.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

M.E.S.H. was my first big inspiration when I got into DJing. His music remains iconic for me to this day, so yes it would be definitely M.E.S.H.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

I’m a rekordbox girl, so it’s my home DJ controller DDJ-RB.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The opening track. It always takes so much time to decide on which one I should go with.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Going through my Bandcamp I see that the first record I bought was the Physically Sick 2 compilation, wow. The last is Ayln – Machinery of Night EP.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Duracell battery, but don’t swallow it.

If it was an animal what would it be?

Definitely Rilakkuma madly dancing in Garage Noord.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Recently I’m having problems with this one: GUAN – Love in Cyberspace. Hmu if you figure it out.

Upcoming in the world of dogheadsurigeri?

I started singing classes recently so who knows?

Anything else we need to discuss?

Yes, please support the LGBTQIA+ community in Poland. Polish authorities are trying to silence activists who support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people’s rights, instead of promoting and protecting the right to equality. It’s insane, read more here. We need your support more than ever!
