Axe On Wax: A ‘Flavour Of The Label’ Mix
Axe On Wax has been in operation for two years. Throughout that time they have been responsible for releases from the likes of Boo Williams, Monosoul, Andres, Chaos In The Cbd and many more. With a penchant towards the more deeply rooted elements of house music they have captivated the ears of dancefloors and experienced music heads with each release. We caught up with the label to talk music, upcoming life and more. Listen to the mix and read the interview below:
Please introduce yourself, who are you, where are you, what are you?
My name is Federico Lange’ , i am a human being from Milan now based in London.
How did the label come to be?
I decided to open AOW during a music business class at Point Blank in April 2014, 4 months after the first release was out. I’ve always wanted to have my own imprint to be honest, and was just waiting for the right time & moment .
What has been your favourite release so far?
My fav release so far is the AOW003 ‘’ Spaghetti&Mandolino Ep’’, no US superstar on that one but the sound is slick!
What is upcoming in the world of Axe On Wax?
AOW007 will be an Album from DJ Aakmael, to be released in September. Before that comes out we celebrate 2 years of the label this August in Berlin at the legendary Prince Charles, with Cinthie, Ron Wilson, Borrowed Identity & one more very very special guest !
Where was the mix recorded?
This mix was recorded in my studio at home here in London on a rainy morning.
Where would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
Well, i’d say a confy fisherman chair facing Lake Como and an ice-cold red stripe on the side .
What should we be wearing?
Something that the hipster down the local store would like .
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location, system, format?
Open air, in a rooftop or terrace and just play some old disco records on some big ass rotary mixer (which by the way i’m doing on the 16th of July @Mick’s Garage).
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
There’s a Die Roh track part of the AXETRAXX 002 in there, my fav of the moment.
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
Ron Hardy & Lerry Levan at Paradise Garage, just to see how things were.
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
Ahhh, I’ve started with a ''dj console 4-mix'' by Hercules, still have it in Milan! Now i have 2 technics and a reloop 2 channel mixer. Occasionally CDJs appear in the cave too. But usually when i play digital i go to record at the Docks Studios so i can drop all unreleased label stuff and tracks from friends and the sound there is better than my room .
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
Track you start with for me. Because if the first track sucks people won't listen.
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
There’s a pretty decent recording of Jon Rust b2b Jamie XX @Brilliant Corners and that was on repeat for quiete a while.
What were the first and last records you bought?
First record i got from Amazon was from Paul Kalkbrenner . Last one was the RSD 2016 release on RelativeRelative from John Swing himself and Mr G .
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Probs like an avocado !
Anthing else we need to discuss…
YES ! WE DIDNT SPEAK ABOUT AXETRAXX !
Axe Traxx is the new sister label of Axe On Wax, white label, 180grams, hand stamped, hand number and distributed by us with a lot of love . On the first Ep we had the unknown Australian duo Sonderr with a remix from Mall Grab. Was really happy with the success of the first release! The second one will be out in August and it’s a split Ep between the italians Dj Octopus & Sagats (aka Die Roh) & unheard producer Trudge. The label seems to go deep to find new talents around the globe.
