Audrey Danza is a flourishing name on the Swiss underground music scene.

The DJ and label owner has become known for her genre-spanning sets which take in a wide breadth of sounds from trance, Italo and techno to post-punk, percussive and industrial — there’s still a sense of her love for all things cosmic that comes through.

In her home of Geneva she’s a resident DJ at Motel Campo, a night club-cum-art gallery in Carouge. It’s alongside the co-director of the club, Nicolas Oggier, that she runs Proxima, a new label launched in lockdown last year.

Following their first release, a 1984 Belgian single, the pair released a compilation called Dancefloor Memories. Featuring the likes of Powder, Neu Verboten, BSS, NVST and more, the release explored the artist’s memories and epiphanies on the dance floor through the medium of music, combined with a podcast series that delved into the subjects further.

There’s plenty more to come on the label this year, mainly on the reissue tip, plus Audrey’s working on new music and remixes herself and planning to spend her time living between Geneva and Berlin.

Here she takes us over the midweek hump with an energetic mix of sounds to help give you a ‘cosmic perspective’…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

Hello there! I’m Audrey Danza, I am a DJ based in Geneva, resident and working at the club Motel Campo. I also run my label Proxima, we do mainly reissues but also compilations. I have also started production a few times, work in progress but I really enjoy it.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

I imagine it as a cosmic patchwork of sounds, mixing everything between trance, techno, disco, tribal and post-punk. Above all, uplifting music 🙂

Where was the mix recorded?

In the main room of Motel Campo.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Maybe on mars… to get some cosmic perspective, or while jogging outside on a cold winter night and getting excited about the next party.

What should we be wearing?

Santiags and a mini skirt 😉

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

On a beach in Mexico with the H.A.N.D. homemade sound system of my friends from Sound Metaphors.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Probably my favourite track of the mix is ‘Sinderella (Instrumental Version)’ by Betty Wright. I have had this record for a long time and I was happy to be able to play it for the first time in a mix. I think it gives joyful vibes to the mix.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

There are a lot… difficult question. A mix that made an indelible impression on me and has stayed with me for a long time (and still does) is the recording of my friend El Tigre Sound playing at Zukunft back in 2019. I was really impressed by this delicate selection, this mix touched me.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Daniele Baldelli, maybe at Cosmic club or Baia Degli Angeli? Because I’m a big fan of the cosmic sound. I think I could learn a lot from him.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

I have two turntables MK2 and two cdjs 2000 that I still use, also a Xone mixer that works well. Would love to upgrade soon with homemade speakers!

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track you start. I think it really encapsulates the guideline of the whole mix.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First was « Noëlle Joyceky – Somebody In The Sun » and last was « Moskwa TV – Dynamics & Discipline ».

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A fruit bowl, full of vitamin C.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A Sifaka Lemurs, jumping from one tree to the other.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

The track « El Hombre Moderne » by Javier Segura from the record « Nostalgia de lo Humano ». I love this track so much. Upcoming release on my label Proxima but quite hard to mix haha.

Upcoming in the world of …

Lots of records coming out this year on my label Proxima. Some new parties too! And a new home in Berlin from March on.

From this time, I will share my time between Geneva and Berlin. Also currently working on some tracks and remixes, let’s see what 2022 has in store for me.
