Andrew Soul – The Ransom Note ‘Wednesday Alternative’ Mix

Music

You might have had a surprisingly strong start to the week, maybe you've had an utterly despressing first couple of days or maybe it's all just been a bit so-so. However your week is going so far, prepare for it to be dramatically improved as you plug yourself into the mainframe to spend an hour being enthralled by our 'Wednesday Alternative' Mix from Italian stallion Andrew Soul. He's in control at London's East Bloc on Saturday for a big ol' party with Night Sheen so we peppered him with questions about this that and the other.

Before you get reading, make sure you click play and give your ears a midweek treat;

Who are you?

My name’s Andrea, my alias is Andrew Soul.

Where are you?

I’m in Bari, South Italy.

What are you?

A guy with a passion for music of all kinds.

How did you first get into music? Who was your first great inspiration?

My first time walking into an underground club was 17 and everything changed, I got a feeling with that kind electronic music. Ivan Smagghe was playing and I fell in love with him, his record and his mood; then I started following Ivan and focusing on electronic music.

How has your approach to making music changed since you first started out?

My approach changed by searching and learning something new everyday but what was more important for me was to discover how, where, when and who made what we have possible.

Why are we all so hungry for a good beat?

Clubbers are hungry in a club because they want to have fun and feel music, DJs are hungry because they want to convey their feelings to the people dancing.

Where was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded in my studio.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

I think it would be walking down the street, with no idea where to go while smoking a cigarette and having your headphones on.

What should we be wearing?

I love spring, so jeans with a nice shirt and a cool jacket.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

20 people in a low dance, 2 turntables, mixer, funktion one and a black room.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

My latest track alongside my great friend Peter JD, coming in at minute 26:00.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I don’t know, nowadays I’m listening to some mix from Arttu and Terekke, and naturally my beloved duo Snuff Crew.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Aaron Carl (RIP), because he is my idol.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

When I was young I had 2 stanton CDJ s300s and mixer, I don’t remember which model. Now I only have 2 Technics SL-1210MK2 and an allen&heath xone 22 mixer.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

I think the first track, because you have to create a feeling from the beginning, but the “goodbye” track is also important. When people ask for the “last one” you’ve got to pick the right one.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Its so hard to remember the first record, too many years (or beers) ago. Last one is Michael Ferragosto – Pissing On Your Head (Dog In The Night Records) DIN-008.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Pizza.

Right, now for something completely different.

Does Mr Sheen shine umpteen things clean?

I just found it on google haha by the way I hope Mr Sheen does his work very well.

What's your favourite swear word? (We'll print anything. ANYTHING)

Sucker, I like how it sounds haha.

If you accidentally fell into a giant pit, what's the one thing you hope would be waiting for you at the bottom?

Beer.

If you had 4 arms would you play B2B with yourself?

Nope, I think “we” would play the same records.

Do you have any fears? (We won't tell anyone, honest…)

I’m scared of stupid people.

What's on the way from you in the rest of 2015?

I’m working on several projects at the moment, some with cool singers like Josh Caffe and Hard Ton.

Anything you'd like to add?

I’m really excited to play in the Night Sheen party, so see you on dancefloor.
