Italian ambient maestro
Gigi Masin announces first solo LP in 6 years
Venetian ambient maestro Gigi Masin is set to release his first solo album in 6 years with ‘Movement,’ having recently signed with Sacred Bones Records.
Described as a distinct evolution from 2022’s entrancing ‘Vahine‘ EP, and 2024’s pulsating collab with Rod Modell ‘Red Hair Girl At Lighthouse Beach‘, it follows prior projects including Gaussian Curve, a trio formed by Masin, Young Marco, and Jonny Nash (a favourite around these parts).
New single ‘Lost’ is beautifully oceanic, dreamlike, and poignant, full of synthesized trumpet and blue tones. Masin adds: “Love connects us to life, gives color and scent to everything, makes us determined but also dreamers, passionate and strong… On the contrary, we are lost, extinguished, a hopeless shell, with pain and remorse as sorrow companions. A love letter no longer welcome and thrown into the river”.
Despite the passing of his wife after a long illness and losing his studio gear and archive in a flood, Gigi remains a pure-at-heart optimist, and his work is as beautiful as ever. Since early beginnings in obscurity, his essential 1986 debut album ‘Wind‘ slowly built an organic following on late night radio. He now counts Oneohtrix Point Never, Devendra Banhart, Caroline Polachek, and Joe Boyd as fans, and has collaborated with artists including Ron Trent, Ben Vince, and Joseph Shabason. ‘Movement’ sees Masin continue to secure his seat at the table of true ambient legends.
