FREE RANGE 2012

Art & Culture

The UK’s largest graduate art and design exhibition Free Range is returning this summer for another seven week showcase of emerging British-based art and design talent. Taking place in the Old Truman Brewery (who conceived and support the concept) Free Range is a collaborative grass roots project that brings together a vast network of new creatives under one roof. Now in its twelfth year and with over a hundred and fifty UK arts courses participating, Free Range has become an annual destination 'market place' encouraging collaborations and links between the students, their places of study and industry. Disciplines include fashion, design, photography, art, interiors and motion arts.

Under the guidance of creative director Tamsin O’Hanlon Free Range has become a crucial part of London’s cultural calendar attracting over 100,000 visitors to the free exhibitions last year. Over fifty participating UK universities and art colleges including Middlesex University, Nottingham Trent University, Winchester School of Art and Ravensbourne College are given the creative freedom to design their own shows and exhibition spaces whilst benefiting from the supportive Free Range framework. Since its launch, Free Range has maintained a reputation for being a hub of raw, creative talent where the project is the product of its exhibitors as opposed to vice versa.

Free Range is constantly innovating and evolving (the last two years have seen the introduction of the popular 'Fashion' and 'Motion Arts' categories) and are continually looking at ways to expand and develop. This year, a panel of leading industry ambassadors (including former British designer of the year Giles Deacon, Fashion East founder Lulu Kennedy MBE and Bazaar Fashion Features Editor Kay Barron) have been appointed to support the project alongside this years media partners and PR. The universities and students have also been invited to create their own mini-events (talks, workshops, etc.) during their exhibition days to highlight their shows.

In addition to the exhibitions and live shows, Free Range will continue its ongoing portfolio website as a platform for displaying the work of participating and former exhibitors.

The Free Range exhibitions are free and open to the public but all catwalk shows are invitation only. The Free Range catwalk shows commence on 28th May and the public exhibition commences on 31st May.
