Preview: Green Man 2017
For the past fifteen years The Green Man Festival has risen to the top end of medium sized festivals to sit alongside the likes of End Of The Road and the recently departed Secret Garden Party. With Bestival slowly moving into something more popcentric, and Latitude’s slip into an alt-V for ‘indie dads’ in Converse, this festival based in the Brecon Beacons in Wales has long offered something more discerning.
Over the dates 17th August through to the following Sunday, bands such as Ride, who’s recently released fifth album ‘Weather Diaries’ is an unexpected career high, indie stalwarts British Sea Power, the nearly legendary PJ Harvey and crazy dad dancers Future Islands take to the main stage with guaranteed hefty crowds in attendance.
As with most festivals, the more interesting draws are on the smaller stages, hip-hop poet Kate Tempest over two albums has been one of the most essential live acts in the UK right now, sleazy indie five piece Pumarosa released one of the best British rock records earlier this year with their debut long player ‘The Witch, and the seething punk influenced wig out psychedelia of The Oh See’s will all be highlights.
Although electronic music isn’t hugely represented here, the little they do have is the absolute cream, Ronnie Size & MC Dynamite will tear the roof off, Actress’s more accessible material on this year’s ‘AZD’ album on Ninja Tune is proving to be a dance music high point of 2017, while Jon Hopkins followed by Daniel Avery is a must attend.
With older more established acts such as Ryan Adams, Liars, St Etienne, Julian Cope scheduled alongside the riot-tronics of Madonnatron, the alt-pop of Methyl Ethyl, and the post-punk doom of W H Lung, Green Man’s eclectic approach to scheduling will prove to be a high point of the congested UK festival circuit.
