Review: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Trapdoor

Music

Repetition is something that I've never been particularly fond of in music, to me the over-use of the same phrase or riff has always felt a tad lazy if there isn't any development to back it up. However, when a sinister voice is beckoning you in with the over-use of the word 'Trapdoor' in a way that makes you feel like you're being hypnotised and led into a very dangerous place there's something about that same word that becomes hauntingly addictive incredibly quickly.

Throw is some enticing flute sounds to the mix and you're left with an absolute stunner from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – their latest sounds measuring at well under three minutes yet that's still more than enough time to get right under your skin and into that part of your brain that'll have you repeating it for weeks in all sorts of unsuitable situations. Some of the drum fills in this track are absolutely spectacular and manage to capture your attention without ever being centre stage.

Though it's hard to shake the feeling that you're being taken down a terrifying path by a mysterious man in a flowing coat and large hat, it's hard not to enjoy these quasi-psychedelic sounds as they play upon that sense of intrigue that sits close to the heart of all us creative types. Time to step through that trap door then, see you on the other side!
