Premiere: Lanark Artefax – Tonal Plexus

Music

Though we here at R$N Towers may consider ourselves wordsmiths (Do we? Do we really? – Ed.), none of us had the foggiest idea of what exactly a Lanark Artefax was and what it did. That being said, this one that we've seemed to stumble across as we bumble the the aural side of the interwebs seems to be a Scottish fella who seems to know a thing or two about putting together some top quality sounds. He's just about to send his debut EP Windox Rush out into the ether but, before we could let him escape our clutches, we managed to persuade him to let us bring you the opening track from the EP so we could bask in his glory. We even held onto him long enough to interrogate him, nicely. Ish.

Open up your eyes and ears to the world of Lanark Artefax, you won't be sorry;

Who are you?

Lanarkus Artefaxum, 21.

Where are you?

55°50'06.7"N 4°16'41.1"W.

What are you?

I'm bored and have machines.

What deranged rock did you crawl out from under and what the hell did they put in the water under said rock for you to make music such as this?

58°14'38.2"N 5°20'19.1"W. Anthrax.

How did you first get into making music? Who were your first great inspirations?

Few of my mates got into electronic music and DJing in Glasgow when we were at school and started a radio station/record label. I sucked at mixing and thought maybe I could make music instead. First major inspirations were just the guys who ran labels and parties out of Glasgow at the time – LuckyMe, Numbers etc. – but I was too young and most of the time had to get my older mates to sneak me in which was a laugh. Now I harness all of my energy from the great Cthulhu.

Describe your sound without using the letter 'e'.

不協和音. (Having whacked this into Google translate, we get the answer 'dissonance' which technically has an 'e' so…)

What makes your music worth listening to? What do you do that you feel no-one else does?

I like to design my own tuning systems. Perhaps a lot of people don't do that because they don't want migraines or their animals to abandon them.

When did you last touch your toes? Can you touch your toes? Can we touch your toes?

This morning. Yes. Yes.

How warped is your mind?

It's a matter of perception and medication.

What's the strangest thing you've ever done to a window?

What happens with Velux, stays with Velux.

Would you rather fly a plane or captain a ship? Why?

Captain a ship. Retractable telescopic device.

What are these here sounds all about then?

Industrial playback functionality.

How hard would it be to actually burn waves? Any tips?

Not all that hard actually. It's a sacrificial thing. I don't think we're supposed to talk about it.

What piece of music makes you cry?

Fatima Yamaha – What Is a Girl To Do.

When were you happiest?

1996?

If you had to send one record into space, to introduce extra terrestrials to human music, what record would you choose?

Kate Bush – 'Hounds of Love'.

You can choose four members of a band to form a supergroup – who would be in it and what instruments would they be on?

Autechre (Roland TR-606, Roland TR-606), Autechre (Roland TR-606, Roland TR-606).

Which figure from throughout history would you most like to meet and what would you ask them if you had only one question?

Myself fifteen seconds ago. Which figure from throughout history would you most like to meet and what would you ask them if you had only one question?

What do you think the world will be like in 100 years?

Virtual reality everything.

What’s your greatest vice?

Peanut butter everything.

What else can we expect to hear from you this year?

More music. I hope another EP.

Anything you'd like to add?

Nah you guys nailed it.
