The Smartphone Orchestra Has World Premiere At Lowlands Festival

Music

This weekend The Smartphone Orchestra premiered at Dutch music festival Lowlands. Using their smartphones, thousands of festival visitors collectively created a single work of music, composed especially for the occasion: a musical piece with every smartphone making its own unique contribution, thanks to sophisticated technology and an entirely new method of composition. Rather than staring blankly into their illuminated screens at festivals and club nights and rarely taking part, it attempted a cultural riposte to the criticism so frequently uttered against smartphone use today. Loosely inspired by minimal music, the ringtones and notification beeps were used to structure the composition, and The Orchestra recently had a test run at Sonar in Barcelona to the approval of Brian Eno.
