Sancho Panza’s Boat Tunes

Music

Sailing away from our standard not-so-strict 8 Tracks format, the guys behind Sancho Panza have put together a nautical themed selection of tracks. Join The Sancho Sea Captains on deck along with their guest skippers Freddy Love & Erin on the Thames’ shores of London from 8pm-2am on Saturday 24th May. Grab tickets here.

Theme Onedin Line.

Good friend and Sancho Panza regular Michael Cook played this as we left dock one boat party, the perfect bizarre start to proceedings. It’s the theme tune from on old BBC drama series about a shipping line coming out of Liverpool, bit of TV institution for those of a certain age.

  • Freddie Mcgregor Big Ship

We couldn’t set sail without any reggae and here’s a classic from a sweet voiced master.

  • The Congos - Fisherman

Continuing on the reggae tip from the excellent album Heart of the Congos. Some albums have those filler tracks where you skip the needle on but not this one, it’s like a piece of classical music. Saw them live on Sunday night at Glastonbury last year, they smashed it.

  • "Is It All Over My Face? (Female Version)" Loose Joints © 2011 West End Records

OK, maybe we’re bending the rules on this one but it’s a brilliant tune. Legend has it the production duo of Arthur Russell and Steve D’Acquisto waited for the moon to be full before recording the track, worth the wait. A bit of a Sancho classic from our early days but then this is a classic for many.

  • Hues Corporation - Rock The Boat

Continuing on a disco tip, even if it’s more the quattro formaggi end of the spectrum. You do get some psychedelic visuals to calm the seas!

  • Move D - Sur Un Bateau Avec Eric (Uzuri014)

So time to play some house as that’s what we’re about. A beautiful piece of watery deep house complete with underwater vocals. Un Bateau is French for boat!

  • Fluke Slid

An old classic with the tenuous nautical link being “Into the Deep….” This tune was given a helping hand following its’ inclusion in the seminal Sasha and Digweed Renaissance mix from 1994.

  • Nicely Nicely Rocking The Boat

So it’s a bit daft but we don’t mind a bit of that and you get an opening cameo from Frank Sinatra. Sinatra apparently requested to be buried with a bottle of Jack Daniels by his side, shows a touch of class to not turn up to the after life party empty handed.
