Influences: Yannick Labbe

Music

Until the Trickski's unfortunate death in 2014 (DJ duo decides enough), Yannick Labbé was the producer and one of the two DJs that toured the world, renowned for their unpredictability and "mashing" of genres. Mash was all the rage back then, but this is now and Yannick is back. With releases on O*RS, and fascinated by the subtle violence in disco, he delivered us a selection of tracks that may "emphasise the mid-range, just stomp or have some dark disco crazy lyrics". Cheers.

Ur - Hi Tech Jazz

This was the first tune that made me fall in love with synthetic sounds. In this song, everything just felt right – its hard to explain, but for me, from the first second that I heard this for the first time, everything changed. My conception of what I liked soundwise, and, most importantly, the notion of ”musical genres” collapsed. This tune is Techno, but there’s so much musicality on display. The melody is so naive and sweet, the sounds so raw and brutal – this record still blows my mind to this day.

  • Barnt - Geffen (Cómeme 013, 2012)

    This is perfection. Not one element in this tune is not right. This monster is very well alive, and I think I will always play it.

  • Sun Palace - Rude Movements

    Noodling, noodling, noodling. Is it disco? Or some kind of progressive jazz? I don’t really care, I just think it’s good. And it’s one of the first discoid tracks where I noticed that there was something else going on behind the obvious – I think there’s a really dark and mean vibe underlaying all this noodling and these positive melodies. ”Rude Movements“ started something that I am looking for in sound to this day: the dark side of disco that vibes along all this night-time glitter.

  • Ada -- Luckycharm

    One of my absolute favorites of all times, actually plays in the same league as Hi-Tech-Jazz for me. These sounds are 100% plastic, but they sound handmade at the same time. In this tune, you will find germanized techno and almost R’nB-esque elements all topped off by an incredibly conclusive sounddesign. Ada is one of my all-time hero-producers, and she is one of the very few electronic live-acts that make sense. At least, that’s‚ my opinion. I’m a fan. OK?

  • Lcd Soundsystem - Losing My Edge (Live At Madison Square Garden)

    Oh well, here comes the obvious one. But what can I do. I just love LCD Soundsystem – I could’ve taken any LCD Song. I love the arrangements, the sound of the drum recordings, the synths they use, the playfulness, AND their lyrics. I picked this song, because I believe it’s where I stand at the moment. Haha.

  • Quiet Village-Can't Be Beat

    As the title says. This tune is basically a showcase for the 707’s kick drum (at least I think it is one). And since then, this was my favorite kick drum – until the arrival of my Tanzbär.

  • Dirkleyers:::::Newseriousone

    This tune is so organic and synthetic at the same time. A true classic for me, and a huge hit. As with many tunes that resonate in my head, ”New Serious One“ is one of these tracks that are undenyingly something (in this case techno), but refuse to be labelled. That’s how classics are born.

  • Akzidenz Grotezk - Isbjorn

    This is such a treasure. When I have the record in my hands, I feel like Gollum. All these tiny little elements finally making up a groove that gets topped by a somewhat trancey synthsound – it’s just a little tune showing that techno is more than serious machine-soul – it’s fun. And in doing this, Isbjorn has done pretty big things.
