Influences – X-Press 2

Music

The adventurous, swashbuckling duo Rocky and Diesel have always had one motto at their helm – 'X-Press 2 make music for the dance floor.' With over two decades of aural experience working together, the pair know each other better than any captain and his first mate across the seven seas. Here, the pair each tell us about five tracks that inspire them and you can find out who earns this prestigious praise: "Basically, without him there would be no us."

X-Press 2 will play Sankeys 20th Anniversary Mini Festival at Studio 338 on June 27th. Their new single with Mutiny is coming out on Skint Records on 17th July.

Steinski - Lesson 3

My favourite of the 3 lessons and one of those tracks that inspired me to start making pause button mixes and wanting to be a DJ. – Rocky

  • Steinski - Lesson 3

My favourite of the 3 lessons and one of those tracks that inspired me to start making pause button mixes and wanting to be a DJ. – Rocky

  • Grove Roots

This is a great documentary which traces the groves past and it’s importance to the surrounding area. A huge musical and cultural influence… London’s original melting pot. – Diesel

  • Cloud One - Happy Music (12'' Mix).Wmv

Patrick Adams production was the original concept that morphed into Muzik Express. – Rocky

  • Dramatics In The Rain

Hard to put into words the impact this record has had. This was probably my first introduction to soul music at an early age. The production and vocal deliveries are sublime and a killer intro to boot. A near perfect record.- Diesel

  • Reggie Dokes - Perceptions

I could listen to Reggie tracks all day long on a loop forever. Simply beautiful house music.

  • Ruts Dc - Push Yourself-Make It Work

Had to be included on the list. Myself and Rocky grew up in the area where band were originally from. Always breaking the mould and diversifying whether they were supporting Misty in Roots or later on in this clip hooking up with the Mad Professor. Love the fusion of punk, funk and dub. Taken from the excellent Rhythm Collision vol.1 album. – Diesel

  • Dj Pierre - Let The Music Take You Higher (Original Yo Yo Mix) 1994

Basically, without him there would be no us. – Rocky

  • Dinosaur L-#5 Go Bang[12'']

I remember hearing this for the first time on Robbie Vincent’s radio show back in the early ’80s. Completely blew me away. It was like nothing I’d heard before. Totally abstract dance music. A mythical record and the start of an obsessive obsession of all things Arthur Russell. – Diesel

  • Yello ~ Live At The Roxy -- Hq Sound Remastered

‘Hi. I’m Dianne Brill and I give you… Yello!” Still gives me goosebumps. First heard this on Westwood’s LWR show way back when. Blew my mind. – Rocky

  • Fingers Inc. - Mystery Of Love (Instrumental Mix)

The first House record that I was fully aware of and one which I remember being played by DJ Sean French at a soul weekender back in 1986. Still to this day my favourite house record. Larry Heard a true visionary. – Diesel
