Influences – Tronik Youth

Music

With over 75 remixes and 25 singles under his belt across the last decade, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Tronik Youth (aka Nein Records head Neil Parnell) has also released a few albums in that time. However, he's been saving up his long-form aural offerings until now – his debut album Youth is Wasted on the Young is set for release on 20th July and features Factory Floor’s Gabe Gurnsey on drums. To celebrate this long overdue LP, we asked Mr Youth to talk us through some of the sounds that have inspired him the most.

Tronik Youth's debut album Youth is Wasted on the Young is out on 20th July on Nein Records.

1981 Atari 2600 Commercial.

This was when the future for me became a reality, as a child, the chip sounds….the graphics….my mind as a small child was totally blown.

  • Yazoo - Ode To Boy

As a young kid and in my eyes, Vince Clark was a god. His sense of the futuristic classic hook or melody, is sadly lost in underground dance music. This awoke me to production: the phased sounds, the stripped percussion, the studio as an instrument.

  • Miss Nicky Trax - Acid In The House (Music Video)

New beat was a massive influence on my sound and still is… The slower end of the dance spectrum, but with the dark influences of industrial and the emerging Chicago house style.

  • Six Simple Synthesizers-Man Parrish

I became obsessed with US electro music. The robotic melodies, the syncopated funk… And this track features Klaus Nomi, another outsider.

  • Sylvester - I Need Somebody To Love Tonight (Instrumental) [Fantasy, 1979]

Patrick Cowley/ Sylvester… Cowley’s music has had a massive effect on the way I make music. Layers of arpeggiation, lots of percussion. He never stops being a source of inspiration.

  • Talking Heads - Big Blue Plymouth (Eyes Wide Open)

David Byrne is a huge influence in my life. The artist reflecting art and culture in everything he does, concepts that reflect the world back at itself.

  • Set The Tone - Rap You Love - Oxford Road Show.M4v

White boy punk vibes meets black funk. I loved this band as a teen. Vocoders and the compass point bass vibe too!

  • Nitzer Ebb - Live At Technoclub 1989

I was lucky enough to see them support Depeche Mode in the early ’80s and they changed my view of how an electronic band can be so heavy and dark.

  • Original Sony Walkman Commercial 1983

When I got my first walkman it changed my life. Living in a musical world of my very own, wherever I wanted to be.

  • Human League, 'Do Or Die', On O.T.T.

Dare + Love and Dancing are the two records that influenced me for most in my life. Pop and electronics combined in a heady brew. Phil is one of my biggest heroes!
