Influences – Tony Humphries

Music
As one of the most pivotal names in house Tony Humphries has done it all…except give us a personal glimpse into his inspirations. The Brooklyn native is probably most well known for his stints on KISS FM in their glory years alongside his residency at New York's pivotal Zanzibar nightclub, spoken by some in the same breath as Paradise Garage and The Warehouse.
Before he touches down in London this Saturday (7th) alongside Joey Negro and Bobby & Steve for Groove Odyssey's 6th Birthday we have the privilege of Mr Humphries imparting his influences to R$N.
Quincy Jones "Tell Me A Bedtime Story"

One of the most beautifully orchestrated records, the strings and arrangement were incredible. This was classical music that I could follow.

  • Double Exposure "Ten Per Cent"

The first big record that I played at a big event.

  • The Trammps - "Love Epidemic (Extended Version)"

    CHURCH!

  • Rare Earth "Get Ready"

This was very influential back then, especially the drums of this alternative band.

  • Mfsb Ft The Three Degrees "Love Is The Message (Philadelphia Intern. Records 1973)"

You can’t get away from it to this day. This was the biggest jazz record that everyone jammed to, the undisputed biggest dance record of all time!

  • Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing"

These two were big radio hits for me. I love the melodies, they’re very inspiring.
