Thredd is a London‑based group formed in late 2023 by Will Lister, Max Winter, and Imogen Williams who are set to release their debut record on Scenic Route. This playlist spotlights their influences.

It’s always fascinating when a band is formed by a collective of musicians who each operate independently as part of alternate projects. What is the rationale? Where does the influence come from? What’s the need for something new?

In the case of thredd, the three members who make up the group all operate successfully individually and as part of a broad array of other collaborative outlets, so why now?

thredd are about to release their debut material as a group on London via NYC record label Scenic Route which has become a critically acclaimed force well versed in breaking promising new band. With all the weight of expectation on the project, given the independent careers of each of the group, there is a lot of excitement around the release.

thredd are seeking to create a musical world built around “cold pop”—a moody synthesis of shoegaze, alt-pop, trip-hop rhythms, and brooding atmospherics.

‘It’s Lovely, Come On In’ will be available from the 14th of August later this month and we invited them to dissect some of their musical influences which perhaps inform the project.

Portishead - The Rip

[WL] The era-restricted simplicity of this record was really inspirational when thinking about the parameters which we wanted to make this album within. The limitations which existed in the 90s tech when making music provided so much sonic ingenuity that we wanted to have similar parameters for this project while writing it at Laylow in 2023.

  • Radiohead - Idiotique

[WL] This live rendition manages to wrangle the electronic beast into something eerie and beautiful.

  • Aldous Harding - Blend

[WL] i’ve been obsessed with this song since hearing it, the absolute simplicity but beauty in the songwriting and production which reveals itself more and more the more you listen.

  • Gil scott-Heron/Jamie xx - Running

[WL] Again, the simplicity in sound choice for this whole record was very influential for me as a teen.

  • AIR - Sexy Boy

[IATK] This blasting out my mum’s car on the school run is a core memory. They’re a big groove influence and their melodies are perfect.

  • Britney Spears - Showdown

[IATK] I listened to this religiously as a small kid which is kind of wild, obvs I had no idea what she was talking about but I loved the music. It was on a Greatest Hits compilation and I was obsessed with the album cover. She’s definitely sprinkled throughout this record.

  • John Cage - Dream

[MW] There was a couple of upright pianos dotted about the building during our residency, and on a few occasions I would just stay up playing, improvising and recording. Makes me think of this piece by John Cage. I wasn’t necessarily inspired by this directly at the time, but sitting in the space and just listening to what came out.

  • Gary Numan - Are 'Friends' Electric? (Live at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester)

[MW] Always loved how direct his synth lines are, I think we’ve got a bit of that throughout the record. Really reminds me of ‘Party’. Also the live version just feels so huge, like ‘Party’.

  • Metronomy - The Look

[MW] Particular inspired by their use of synths and space, but this song especially reminds me of ‘Horseshow’. The breakdown always reminded me of it and I think when working on that part I was trying to emulate the same kind of feelings harmonically.
