Influences: The Kdms

Music

Somewhere between the eclectic delicacies of pop and dance music we stumble upon The KDMS. The pair experiment in sound design and layer dream like vocals above layers of melodic pads, whether they will one day end up in the charts is yet to be seen. For now the pair are content to exist within a musical sphere in which they feel comfortable.

The duo, which is compirsed of Max Skiba and Kathy Diamond, have just released their second full length album on U Know Me Records. It follows on from a string of previous releases which have appeared most prominently on Munk and Telonius' record label Gomma. There is certainly dance music undertones to the pairs work, but this is also matched with an Eastern European flavour which descends from Max Skiba's Polish roots.

We caught up with the duo to talk influences. See below…

Sumeria - Why Must There Be An End?

Maxi; From the wonderful “Golden Tears” LP, a piece of genius boogie that changed the way I hear and feel. I got this LP from Daniel Wang, shortly after I met him at Astigmatic Festival, which was mentored by my friend Artur 8 Korycinski, who’s also the part of The KDMS project. The complex boogie rhythm is one of the most dramatic and sexiest things ever invented, one of my favourite from the Alec R Costandinos’ catalogue!

  • Novecento - Taking Me Back

Maxi; This is an example of early italo /synthpop track, with unforgettable work of Nicolosi brothers and Dora Carofiglio (known from other projects as Valerie Dore). I remember I got a vinyl for my birthdays from “Gee”, a friend of mine, who was deeply in love with Italo sounds at that time. These were mid 2000s and“Taking Me Back” was an 80s song which broke my shy attitude towards loving italo . With this kind of sound you cant be shy anymore, closed at your bedroom, you need to shout out loud simultaneously with Dora! Thank you Dora! thank you Gee!

  • I-F - I Do Because I Couldn't Care Less

Maxi; It was late 90s, I was spending my pre high school holidays watching WBPM Tv, which was playing this techno tune in a loop. I was looped with the repetitive sound and … yes this monster bass. A rare piece of non lyrical tune I was able to familiarize with in the pre-internet era. Definitively one of the most important steps in my music taste development.

  • Sean Nicholas Savage - More Than I Love Myself

Maxi; I discovered Sean three years ago or something, I wanted to highlight the fact, as it’s quite a recent discovery. But what a discovery! This piece has introduced me to his musical universe, which is full of poppy, emotional ballads with a rare touch of young boy’s naive “authenticity”. I really appreciate the fact that his musical creation is not afraid of being fragile and simple. A true beauty!

  • Wham! - Nothing Looks The Same In The Light

Kathy; As we have just lost our beloved George Michael I would like to add this from my teenage days. It was my favourite on the debut Wham! Fantastic album from 1983. I was thirteen..and in love with Andrew Ridgeley!
