Influences: Meeting By Chance

Music

Who is this mysterious figure selecting music? Why do I recognise him? Where have I seen that face before?

Meeting By Chance is an alias of Skalpel's Marcin Cichy. As one half of the Polish electronic duo he has helped cultivate a sound within the country which has transcended far beyond. Having previously released most prominently on Ninja Tune Marcin Cichy is now revitalising his alter ego which last saw him release an EP under the Meeting By Chance alias back in 2013. His new music is forthcoming on Apollo Records and is expected to land next month.

As is all of his work, the release is expertly crafted and delicate with instrumental flutters and woozy soundscapes. He selects with precision below:

The Conversation (1974) Movie Trailer

Directed by Francis Coppola masterpiece from 1974 is a study of paranoia and loneliness. Gene Hackman as Harry Caul sound / bug expert is also one of his best performances ever. A must have for all field recording artists. Dialogues / sounds / recorded audio here creates highly psychedelic and interesting audio video mixture which is very futuristic. For sure this shaped the way I think about details and precision in my compositions. More movies to watch THX 1138, Blow-up, Berberian Sound Studio.

  • Photographer Duane Michals Talks About His Career

In 2011 I was fascinated by probability in sound. Building modern music from blocks, pre-prepared sequences often takes away soul from final tracks so I was experimenting with different generative music algorithms. I knew I wanted the word CHANCE to be present in the name of my solo project. While looking for inspiration I googled “chance” and noticed works by Duane Michals. His photos were straight visual representations of music I create. Meeting by Chance fitted perfectly on many levels – relations between creator and listener , chance of meeting/hearing my music , suspense , mystery , sequences …

  • Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - "Tones"

Communication with U.F.O through the Sound – what an idea ! So no wonder John Williams was Grammy nominated and won for Best Original Film Score and one for Best Instrumental Composition – ! Later on I was told there was over 300 samples recorded to choose from to fit main scene of the movie .

  • 1/6 The Rules Of Abstraction With Matthew Collings

One on my very few bookmarked websites ever .This Art blog is daily inspiration for my music but also great place to visit that moments when audio mixes are being rendered or ears are to tired to work more .

  • Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (1970) - Full Album

Wow what a sound – I was so proud reading one of reviews on my music saying that it sounds like Miles Davis playing hip-hop. This record was so futuristic for me – I’m huge fan . Played in no verse , chorus form .. perfect film score . It shaped the way I compose . Its all about echos , reverbs , ambient , upright bass , jazzy drums . fantastic !

  • Hexstatic - 'Ninja Tune'

Ninja Tune is very important history of my musical development . as Skalpel we were told that we have this Ninja Sound … So we did send them a demo a couple of times and finally with help of Dj Vadim ,we were touring with that time , we were signed . They opened many doors for us – Dream that came true. Possibility to tour with Coldcut , Hextatic fully opened my imagination how our Audio-Video performances should look . I expected VJ scene to explode but I was wrong… I always considered myself as AV artist but now I found I focus on music only more and more … good choice I hope .Now I’m solo recording music for Apollo Records and feel this thrill of debut – like it was before . fingers crossed .

  • Jean Michel Jarre Zoolook 24 Bit Digitally Remastered By Damac

The very first sampler I had was CASIO SK-1 . No zip drive, no floopy discs to store samples … I recorded samples on tapes for later use .. and I also had this tape with side A : JM Jarre “Zoolook” and Side B SADE “Promise” in my Sony WALKMAN .. Isn’t it the way I create music till now ? – on one side it contains experimental elements but on the other it has this romantic mood . I remember I heard Zoolook first time – It was like thunderbolt of god . The way he used to sample voices – I wanted to be the same . I noticed that sampling is not only about digital … but it opens possibility of creating endless puzzles from any source.

  • Bobby Raps & Corbin - Frozen Tundra

How its possible they produce so great sounding music ? composition , groove , vocals . Two complementary artists and perfect combination or future R’n’B, hip-hop, pop, idm … one of my favourite records of all the time . Fist music I heard from them was Spooky Black “Without You” I was no sure if it was joke or not . but music and vocal were so well produced . I Calle it Professional Amateurs – pure love .
