Influences: Marcel Fengler

Music

Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, stalwart of Germany's techno scene, Marcel Fengler, moved further into electronic music and turntablism, running his own parties in hometown, Fürstenwalde, with Marcel Dettman. Drawing inspiration from a wealth of influences – from discovering the street culture of the US within the confines of East Germany during the 1980s, to the universally groundbreaking sounds of Aphex Twin right through to to co-production with Efdemin and of course, Berlin’s rich clubbing heritage – we chat creative catalysts with Fengler in this retrospective insight.

Aptly timed, Fengler returns to his own imprint – Marcel Fengler Index (IMF) – next month, with new EP, Kyu. Originally slated for Ostgut Ton, the decision to house Kyu on IMF marks a new directon in Fengler's musical career.

Stepping outside of the Ostgut Ton box, the acclaimed artist continues to merge elements of funk with techno, his signature sound.

Kyu drops on IMF June 10th 2016. Follow Marcel Fengler HERE.

1984 Beat Street

I saw this movie for the first time when I was 12. Back in the GDR, Hip-Hop, Graffiti and Breakdance didn´t really exist. So this was new and fresh for me and I fell in love with it immediately. This explains the funk in my sets, and my fable for sound shaping has a lot to do with this movie.

  • Souls Of Mischief - 93 'Til Infinity

As I was spinning also some Hip-Hop in the early 90´s, there were a lot of crews I´ve been addicted to. Beside Gang Starr, Pete Rock, Kool Keith etc. all of whom I´ve been a huge fan, I played 93 ‘Til Infinity by Souls of Mischief a lot.

  • Lost In Music - 1992 - 1994

This German documentary series influenced my interest in electronic music a lot, since it´s been also my starting point to go out to clubs like Tresor or E-Werk. I love the honest approach in there and it´s still great to see where it all started.

  • Vinyl Presenting Viva Tv Housefrau Berlin House 2

Also in the 90´s, I was really into this nice TV show on VIVA with the unique Mate Galic and charming Sabine Christ. Initially known as Housefrau TV in 94, the title then changed into House TV later in the 90´s and to Berlin House in the end. So many memories in there from venues at this time and track selection as well. Mostly, I couldn´t wait to get the nonyl presenting by Mate himself, or a special guest at end of the show.

  • E-Werk Berlin Video

This club was my second home for many years. My first experience there was in 1994 for Chromapark. I remember spending a lot of weekends there. After it shut down, it turned more into a venue for commercial events. It was hard to find a quality link, though, so I hope this treats you well.

  • Masse

For sure, Berghain has shaped my profile as a DJ and a producer. Nevertheless, I´d like to point out my collaboration with Efdemin for ‘Masse’. This was a starting point of many other things also – my first real collaboration at all. The way we produced the music has influenced my workflow in music production and last but not least, it had even an effect on the label strategy of my own label, Index Marcel Fengler (IMF).

  • Hans Zimmer - Time (Inception)

As a big fan of film music you can´t avoid to get in touch with Hans Zimmer. In my opinion the greatest genius we have sent from Germany to Hollywood. Literally each production touches me in a certain way – but always very deep and overwhelming. So it´s hard to pick a favorite but ‘Time’ is, of course, one of those.

  • Aphex Twin - On

And, for sure, there were a couple of artists who also influenced me a lot. Aphex Twin was one of those forward thinking artists that inspired me in electronic music very early. ‘On’ is such a timeless masterpiece and I still love to play this out in my DJ sets. Even the video is a class of it´s own.

  • Robert Hood - Minus

The King of Minimal Techno was one of my sources also. When I heard `Internal Empire` for the first time I got infected by this sound immediately. Something that has been celebrated as a big wave 10 years later was already born in 1994. Timeless!

  • Planetary Assault Systems - Forms

Luke has accompanied me as an artist since his early productions on Nova Mute or Peacefrog, up to his recent stuff on Mote Evolver. I totally appreciate his uncompromising kind of music. Even though he has changed his sound since back in the days, it´s still very unique and sounds just like Luke Slater.
