Influences: Lawrence

Music

There are unsung heroes within the underground, those who slip by without the regard they perhaps deserve. Sometimes this is by their own choice, whilst in many cases it is simply due to blissful ignorance. Lawrence is arguably one of the most influential figures in electronic music at present and has been for some time. However, if you were to ask a relative newcomer as to his role then they may not in fact know how much he has touched.

As the founder of both DIAL Records and Smallville he has been responsible for releasing music by some of the most groundbreaking artists in dance music. His own musical career has seen him release prominently on Mule musiq, Ladomat 2000, Kompakt and more. His sound is far reaching and draw upon his experiences which have seen him based somewhere between Hamburg and Tokyo.

This month will see him play in London at Five Miles on the 16th of September, we invite him to select some of the most influential pieces of music from his own lineage.

Midori Takada - Trompe L'Oeil (Reel-2-Reel To Digital Conversion)

No other re-release made me happier than “Through The Looking Glass” by the percussionist and composer Midori Takada. I’m so glad to have this album next to other “morning – tea – records” such as Charlemagne Palestine, Delia Derbyshire and Micachu.

  • Ellen Fullman / Konrad Sprenger - Empty Building [Choose Records]

Ellen Fullman, the infamous Long String Instrument virtuoso and composer alongside Konrad Sprenger, who just released my favorite record on PAN, recorded this wonderful album in 2013. I can’t stop listening to it ever since.

  • Arthur Russell - In The Light Of The Miracle

Not only that i entirely admire the work of Arthur Russell’s- this wonderful song includes contributions by other “heroes” such as the stunning Julius Eastman and Peter Zummo. Watch out the amazing Foom records label for more lost Peter Zummo (featuring Arthur Russell) tapes to be released soon!

  • Rhythim Is Rhythim - It Is What It Is (1988)

Beautiful and simple techno classic that still makes people cry on the dancefloor after being released almost 30 years ago. How could Derrick May and Juan Atkins and many others create dance music that literally stays forever?

  • Suzanne Ciani - Paris 1971

No other musician combined science and emotion in such a particular way than Suzanne Ciani. Active since the early seventies she is working in the most diverse fields, from serious synth studies to beautiful soundscapes to silly commercial sounds. A truly inspiring musician and person.

  • Phill Niblock The Magic Sun (Sun Ra) Remastered

Phill Niblock’s outstanding video on Sun Ra and his Archestra who created the greatest source of free music, breaking the boundaries of politics, myth, culture and music.

  • Sky Walking - Fordite - Video By Loretta Fahrenholz

Another fantastic video by Loretta Fahrenholz, including the music of my band Sky Walking. Looks like aliens dubbed a serious business documentary, haha. I really had to include this- making spontaneous and free music with friends is the most inspiring thing ever.
