Zak Brashill knows what makes the floor tick. No, really, he does. As a producer he has released music on an array of stalwart labels which includes the likes of Keysound, Sneaker Social Club and more. His sound draws influence from bass and the grittier side of dance music sitting somewhere between dubstep, grime, rave, hardcore and breakbeat. All of these things make him a very interesting character to observe and his latest forthcoming EP sees him elevate his game even further. Releasing on Sneaker Social Club his new EP "Chemotaxis" circles hardcore and jungle. We invited him to contribute to our influences series as he selects with promise…

Ray Hurley - The Rain (Breakbeat Mix)

‘So goin back to me back in 2014 when I made the Chemotaxis EP originally, I was still on a warping UK Garage with UK Hardcore & Jungle flex, tracks like this nailed that massively, this is an absolute percy in that sense’

  • Ray Hurley - The Rain (Breakbeat Mix)

‘So goin back to me back in 2014 when I made the Chemotaxis EP originally, I was still on a warping UK Garage with UK Hardcore & Jungle flex, tracks like this nailed that massively, this is an absolute percy in that sense’

  • Harvey Mandel - Baby Batter

‘2014 was also very transitional for me in that I had kind of exhausted the typical techniques and sample styles prevalent in UK “continuum” music and I had started digging a lot deeper into stuff I had always loved but never explored enough, time thankfully granted by being a student in London with plentiful amounts of student finance and essentially never actually going into uni itself. This is mental track, all of Harvey Mandel’s stuff is so lush, this and Christo Redentor are incredible.’

  • Lil Wayne - Dr. Carter

‘Think what you will of Wayne, but his work rate is (was) outrageous and I’m an absolute sucker for good use of a David Axelrod sample. Also Waynes playful wordplay in this track is incredible. My approach to building beats has always been equal parts in debt to UK Continuum styled music and Hip Hop’

  • Outnumbered Vs. Genaside Ii - Narra Mine (Mix 4)

‘Another perfect example of that amazing marriage between UK Hardcore and UK Garage. So happy this mix is on youtube for people to listen to now. I remember picking this up in Greenwich Music & Video Exchange for like £3 back when I lived in Lewisham where I made Chemotaxis’

  • Hard Drive - Burial Squad

‘It doesn’t take a lot to get me gassed off a really to the point classic UK Hardcore tune. This is just a really good example out of countless others. It’s pure rollage not giving a fuck. Breaks, Sub, some vocals lobbed in that were on pretty much every other UK Hardcore whitelabel at the time and then just some pitched chords and strings. It’s so simple but it creates something so unique to UK. You can smell the MDMA’

  • The Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea (Graham Massey Mix)

‘Papua New Guinea is a tune that will stand the test of time forever. Every time I hear it all my hairs stand on end. But this often overlooked Graham Massey (of 808 State) remix is absolutely incredible and definitely deserves a shout out’

  • Graeme Revell - Rain Forever (Taken From 'The Crow' Soundtrack)

‘As i’ve said in the past the tracks on this EP were part of a mental recovery for me getting over the death of my great granmother, particularly the track ‘What Lies Beyond’ which i dedicated to her by sampling this very track from the soundtrack to The Crow. I used to be obsessed with this film when I was probably about 5yrs old? To the extent I named my pet cat at the time after the character in the film haha. But I always used to watch this on VHS down my nans house after school. It took me a really long time to realize how great and emotional the soundtrack was. Very Burial, hands off Burial I was here first.’

  • Giuliano Sorgini - Ultima Caccia (1974)

‘I take finding open drum breaks very seriously. As I said previously. being given unlimited time, no financial worries and no sleeping pattern allowed me to sink very deep into obscure records, one of the few blessings of the internet. I stumbled upon this, I can’t remember how, but it’s one of many Italian Library records that are just astounding. I did a little gushing love letter to Library records (particularly italian ones) in an interview with WatchTheHype so I’ll keep it brief. THIS IS FUCKING SICK. ITS JUST ONE DRUM BREAK THAT KEEPS CHANGING. So naturally I sampled it for title track ‘Chemotaxis’, and no I didn’t spend £700+ buying it on vinyl. I was naughty and sampled this very YouTube video. No shame in that, Madlib even does it. Nur Nur’
