Influences: Cromby

Music

The tail end of the year has been busy for up and coming producer, Cromby. In the past few months he has released two new EP's on bothSulta Selects Silver Service and on Feel My Bicep. Two labels with prominent followings and a keen sense of sound. The Belfast born, Berlin based producer looks set to emerge as a fresh faced talent across the next year and we expect big things.

His influences run deep and help to form the basis of his own musical output, subtle nods given to the days of classic house music and the old clubs of Chicago. Jackin' kicks and woozy acid lines reinforce the notion.

We invited him to take us through his musical roots which he does so below in fine style picking tracks by the likes of Underground Resistance, Armando, Dj Sneak and beyond.

Red Bull Music Academy: Theo Parrish @ Rts.Fm - 10.07.2009: Master Class

This really inspired me when I got a bit disillusioned with the infinite possibilities of a DAW. Theo speaks about limitations of a certain machine, in this case MPC 2000xl. I really related and thought, yeah, this could help me in my scenario. I would watch it over and over again, visualising myself owning an MPC until I finally got one, now its the mainstay hub of my studio and I haven’t looked back.

  • Armando - Pleasure Dome

Just Armando in general, the guy was a master with a 303, gone to soon. Always wonder where he would have pushed the boundaries to if he was still around.

  • Dj Sneak - You Can't Hide From Your Bud

Possibly my first dj/producer idol when i was 16 or 17 trying to sneak into raves, used to love caning this.

  • The It - Donnie

First proper introduction to Chicago house, remember being blown away it was really different to anything I was hearing at the time and it really sucked me into a wormhole I’m still in.

  • Layo & Bushwacka! - Love Story (Tim Deluxe Remix)

This was the first record I ever got given. For my 14th birthday, i’d asked for a set of decks. When I got them I realized I didn’t own a record to play on them. My sister had a mate who lived across the road who dj’d so she sent me over and he sorted me out. One was this, one was a dj funk record + a few others and taught me the basics of counting in a record to mix. Actually never gave him them back (sorry) and still give this the occasional spin.

  • Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill - Official Music Video

Inspires me to get up every groggy monday.

  • The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (From "Yellow Submarine")

Thought I’d include this as its probably my earliest memory of music, from my mum playing Beatles albums. It’s quite dark really, maybe thats influenced why I spend so much time in dark rooms listening to techno.

  • Underground Resistance - Timeline

First UR record I bought, they don’t need much of an intro. Massive influences.

  • Mobb Deep - The Infamous (Full Album)

Although I find it tough sometimes to find time for things other than electronic music as i don’t listen to much on the move. This is one album i’ve always came back to over the years since my brief hip hop stint as a teen.
