Influences: Athlete Whippet

Aviram Barath and Robin Paul Braum are familiar faces, both very active in the midst of the London house and electronic music community, together they are Athlete Whippet.

Over the years the pair have released music via the likes of Squareglass and Exploited. However, this month the pair have released perhaps their most prominent material to date, a new EP on Toy Tonics which seems destined for sun kissed dancefloors, late night rendezvous and wild disco dancing. It’s a wholehearted, warm, big fun record set to work wonders on the dancefloor.

The pair have found inspiration in various forms and this playlist demonstrates their fluid versatility as they pick tracks by the likes of Alice Coltrane and Guedra Guedra.

Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda - Om Rama (Official Audio)

That whole World Spirituality Classics album is just outright amazing. Completely next level, we could barely believe our ears when we first heard it. That fusion between ashram music and avant-garde electronics and synthesis creates something totally unheard – classic and extremely futuristic at the same time.

  • Uggug

We just love Guedra. How he incorporates his North African heritage into electronic music creates such a unique sound and the energy is immense. It’s really refreshing that it’s not just a matter of sampling for him but those traditional melodies and rhythms are deeply engraved into his composition and production. Pure fire, never heard anything like it.

  • Dopamine

Hinako hasn’t released an awful lot yet, but what she’s put out is fantastic. She’s a sensational piano player and her synthesis and sound design are really on point. This track here is from a compilation that was one of our highlights from last year, SOS Music Vol. 1 with an all wxmen line-up. Hinako is perfectly hitting the sweet spot between dark and uplifting here.

  • Nicola Cruz - Barretto (Tienes Algo) (Official Video)

Nicola is inspirational for us in many ways as he’s such a versatile producer and a true pioneer of latin american electronic music. He took an amazing direction with this recent EP on Rhythm Section. Super bold and committal, 100% driven by rhythms and percussion and waiving harmonies completely. It really is peak energy throughout.

  • K15 - Yellow

K has been a big inspiration for us right from the start. He’s an amazing jazz musician and he’s a master at fusing those harmonies with dance and hip hop grooves. He never seems to look for big drops, it’s all musicality with him. Love that!

  • More Than A Woman

Amazing how she mixes up this acid bassline with an R&B groove and melodies. That’s a rare mashup to find! Bridging the gap between pop and dance seamlessly without drifting into cheesy at all.

  • Semi Precious - Into Illusion (Official Video)

Our BDFM and eternal inspiration! We met at uni, played lots of different sorts of music together and started our label squareglass together too. We just released his new album Post-Euphoria there where Guy explores beatless music, reminiscent of the dance floor but removed from it.

  • Cody Currie & Joel Holmes - Blue Tv Screen

One by Toy Tonics buddies Cody Currie and Joel Holmes. Always had a sweet spot for when dance music comes together with really good instrumental performance and this is a perfect example. Super playful, lots of feel. Ace.

  • Aleksandir - Yamaha

Synth work’s unreal here. Wow! Aleksandir’s got such a good feel for keeping things tender and gentle. He did a remix for us last year which has exactly these same qualities. It’s rare to find that sort of touch in electronic, and especially in dance music.
