Fairmont – Influences

Music

Jake Fairley, known further afield as Fairmont, returned to Favourite Robot this month with his Close Your Mind EP. Darker, more mature sounds and attitude abound, the record lies at the deeper end of melodic, synth-centric techno. Touching on post-punk, new wave and hinting at the Moroder-esque, the tracks are detailed, balanced and full sounding dancefloor food, likened readily to stuff by the Knife an Max and Mara.

So let Jake tour you around the artists and tracks which shone brightly at turning points in his life – some extremely nice electronic music collected here, and an interesting Stooges cover…

Closer Musik - You Don't Know Me

Rather than an “all time” list I thought I would compile the songs that were influential to me at a specific moment in my life – when I moved away for the first time and went to Germany in 2003. I’ll start it off with Closer Musik who made such amazing songs in their short run.

  • Ricardo Villalobos - Dexter (Two Lone Swordsmen Mix)

Is this magic or what? The original is a masterpiece, but so is this. It was so inspiring to me when it came out.

  • Kotai/Bader - Welltick

Those were really my times – goofy nerds making weird club tracks in their bedrooms, singing into shitty microphones. Is anything this cool anymore?

  • T.Raumschmiere - H-Babe

Marco was on fire for a couple years there. His first few EPs were so exciting. Bringing the punk vibe to electronics is easier said than done and for a while he was the master.

  • Lopazz Feat. Alex Cortex - I Need Ya

This was a serious banger. It was always sure to get all the girls dancing.

  • Joakim - Come Into My Kitchen

Sometimes you just need to party right?

  • Justus Köhncke - Timecode

    Completely timeless. Fucking masterpiece.

  • Ada - Luckycharm

I remember hearing this for the first time at an open air in Berlin. I wondered what kind of person made such wacky music. Sure enough within a few weeks I was best buds with the whole Areal Records crew.

  • Superpitcher - Heroin

Axel has made so many great songs over the years. The way he balances the delicate with the intense is quite impressive.

  • Hands Gruber - Dogtime

A crude attempt at a Stooges cover. The scene in Toronto always seemed so influenced by Detroit, but I was way more excited by the mixture of electro and song-based techno that was coming out of Europe. I hope I have this on DAT somewhere, because this youtube clip sounds terrible.
