Dave Angel – 8 Tracks Of Uk Techno

Music

Dave Angel is a key part of the UK techno scene, a pioneer who's been pushing the sound for over 20 years. The son of a Jazz musician and elder brother to British hip-hop artist Monie Love, Angel first came to prominance when he bootlegged the Eurythmics Sweet Dreams, toughening it with house kicks and a new bassline- Annie Lennox wanted to have all copies of the white label Angel produced destroyed, whilst Dave Stewart saw the potential in the remix, and insisted it should have an official release. Angel's version broke into the top 40, and he was away.

Now regarded as one of the corner stones of UK techno, we asked Dave to takes us on a tour through his greatest influences that, in his own words, 'are in no particular order, because they're all top drawer.' The results are 8 tracks of genius…

Dave is giving a track away for Christmas – if you want it sent to you (of coure you do!) you need to sign up to his newsletter over here. Otherwise you can keep up with what Angel's up to on his facebook or twitter

Orbital - Chime (12" Version)

The first time I heard “Chime” I knew this was going to be an iconic piece of music, not so much the energy – but the sounds used and the way they were put together were second to none, I consider this to be a UK classic.

  • Dave Angel - Fever (1996)

At the time I made this track I just purchased an Emax 2 sampler. CJ Bolland in Belgium told me how great the filters were. I made this track live in one take, that’s why I consider this to be one of my favourites.

  • Dave Clark Red. 2 Wisdom To The Wise

The first time I heard this one, it was played by Dave himself. I had to go and ask him “what is this track?” and he said it’s something he just got in today – a test press vinyl… I begged him for the record as I was leaving for Japan the next day.. Dave being the kind guy he is gave it to me straight away.

  • F.2 - Dominica (Techno 1994)

I always called this track the “talking juno” with such a beautiful bassline and luscious pads, I was such a big fan I ended up doing a remix of it myself later on – an absolute classic.

  • 808 State - Pacific State

For me 808 were breaking grounds far ahead of their time and it still sounds fresh today.

  • Planetary Assault Systems - Booster

For all those that don’t know, Planetery Assault systems is actually Luke Slater, an absolute Gem of a producer – this track builds and builds with a bassline from hell. Simply brilliant.

  • Paul Woolford - Erotic Discourse (Original Mix)

How can somebody use just a kick drum and one crazy synth sound and still keep the listener interested? Well this track does it.. and an absolute bomb.

  • Dave Angel - Royal Techno Ep - A1 - Rotation

This one has to go in as it was my first release on my own Rotation Records imprint. Renaat from R&S Records came to my studio, I played him this E.P. and told him that it was going out on my new label, he said “This is Royal Techno”, so that’s what I named it.
