Da Multi Snake’s 8 Tracks Of Shangaan Electro

Music

Shangaan BANG are a UK based label specialising in the Shangaan Electro music that issues from the Limpopo region of South Africa. For those unfamiliar with the sound, Shangaan Electro takes the traditional music of the Limpopo people (known as the Shangaan – in reality a mix of various ethnic groups) and hypes it up with wonky synth stabs and frantic, high-speed drum loops. The new album from Limpopo producer Da Multi Snake, called, simply enough, Da Multi Snake Vol #2, features 6 tracks of party starting action, with the tempo rarely dropping beneath 160 bpm, and all the unexpected left turns and joyous vocals you could possibly want.

Here, he gives us the inside track on his 8 favourite Shangaan Electro tracks.

Thomas Chauke - Xipereta

Thomas Chauke has 33 albums! He’s been in the game for such a long time and never disappoints. He’s most well-known for the tone of his guitar and on this one you can hear why ‘ding-ding-ding-ding ding-ding-ding’. Haha.

  • Shaka Bundu- Penny Penny

An obvious choice. Penny Penny is a Shangaan/Tsonga disco legend. Everyone that I know owns or has owned this album. Loved his voice as a kid. Still play this one regularly.

  • Benny Mayengani - Solly ( Volume 04 )

Try and listen to this one and not smile, you can’t do it! If I’m feeling down, I play Benny’s stuff.

  • Joe Shirimani Hekele Heke

This one has a beautiful melody. Joe is one of my favourite Shangaan artists of all time, he’s got so much soul.

  • Tsekeleke - Nozinja

Nozinja is the boss. I really like how he rolls when it comes to business. I’m happy that he’s had so much success in the UK and the new music he’s putting out is great. This one is just ridiculous. I’d love to work with him.

  • Raduma Tiko

A producer, vocalist and really nice guy. Love his sound. He uses super funny sounding toms, classic shangaan guitar tones and has a great voice.

  • Hansaholic

I’ve been a fan of Sunglens’s for a long time. She’s a singer and has appeared on loads of my favourite albums. Of all the Tsonga vocalists, she’s the one that I’d most like to produce.

  • Tshetsha Boys - Nwa Pfundla

The guys with the elastic legs. Tshetsha boys are the top Shangaan Electro dance crew. They wear the craziest costumes and move so quickly (when they perform, the music can reach 170, 180 and sometimes over 190bpm). I love watching them.
