Music

Known for his productions on labels such as Get Physical and Soweso, Dutch house DJ Boris Werner has established himself as a leading asset in the world of house. Ahead of his performance at Familia on February 1st, Boris gave us an insight into some of the tracks that have influenced him throughout his career.

Chet Baker - But Not For Me

My dad always used to put this on in the car.. In the beginning I didn’t like it that much but after a while his honeysweet voice creeped up on me. Perfect for the lazy Sundays.

  • The Doors - Love Street

One of my favorite records of the Doors.Gives a good impression of how good Jim’s poems and the Doors’ music melted together. Loving the keys of Ray Manzarek on this one, so playful. I was already a big fan at the early age of 10, before I even knew what they were all about.

  • Lil' Louis - French Kiss

I used to make mixtapes taken from the radio. I remember sitting in the back of the car on vacation and listening to this hypnotic beats, the moment when the breakdown came I was totally mesmerized.Never heard something quite like it, I think I was around 12 at that time…

  • Wu Tang Clan - Shame On A Niggah

This was my rebellion period… Smoking a lot of weed, doing graffiti, messed up high school, didn’t give a shit. Funny times though, but don’t remember much of it, haha

  • Arthur Russell - Arms Around You

Only knew him from his disco records with Dinosaur and Loose Joints but when I dug deeper I found this amazing artist which was way ahead of his time, maybe still is. His capability of singing like playing an instrument really intrigues me.. A little playful, a little shy but still powerful in a way.

  • Mulatu Astake - Yegelle Tezeta

Jazz artist from Ethiopia, almost have every record that he recorded…Saw him last summer at this Festival in Amsterdam and he is still going strong after all those years, amazing to see!!

  • Gemini - La Fusion

One of the weirdest track of him in my opinion. He had this talent of creating weird and abstract house music but neverlost one bit of soul creating it. Everyone nowadays is wondering what happened with him, only a few got an answer to that…

  • Aphex Twin - Fingerbib

First time I heard this I didn’t know what I was hearing, such an weirdass song that sounded like it was made by freaking aliens. The more I listen to it the more I think its just genius.
