Ambassadeurs – Influences

Music

Amassadeurs, the British counterpoint to artists such as Salva and XXYYXX, making leftfield, bass-heavy electronic music that is fast the reputation of the young Brighton-based producer. Taking cues from dub, hip-hop, bass and jazz, but sounding like none of these genres, Ambassadeurs sound is hard to pigeonhole. His distinctive style can be attributed to a Tobin-like love for turning found sounds into samples and processing them beyond recognition creating music as unique as his talent.

In light of the release of his new EP, that’s available for free download, we managed to get him to pass over the influences that have helped Ambassadeurs build his unique sound.

Aphex Twin - Window Licker

This track was one of the first really experimental electronic tracks I heard and opened my eyes to how abstract electronic music could be and introduced me to all these different sounds and was and still is an inspiration. Also it introduced me to Chris Cunningham and I have been a fan since.

  • Smashing Pumpkins - Tales Of A Scorched Earth

I was a massive fan of SP when I heard Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I had this album on repeat for ages. I loved how diverse it was and the sounds they used. I really liked how Billy Corgans voice was really bad but he got away with it by writing great songs and by being really expressive in the way he sang. I did stop listening to them after the album Adore as their music got pretty terrible unfortunately.

  • Four Tet Smile Around The Face

I fell in love with this song when I heard it. It was a great example of how you could really put across an emotion in an almost abstract piece of music without using words or obvious chords or melodies.

  • Dj Paypal Over

Came across this EP recently and got hooked on it. Havent heard anything like it to be honest which is always something I look for in music. Stuff that stands out.

  • Flim - Bad Plus

Had to put this in here just because its one of those songs i’ve listened to hundreds of times and still love. Its a cover of an Aphex Twin track played on acoustic instruments with the most insane drums. It works so well and I love how raw it is.

  • Tame Impala Alter Ego

Got introduced to this band by a friend during one summer and it was on repeat for most of it. The sound of this track/album is perfect. I love how its this wall of distortion that you sink into and just get carried by. There is so much going on its hard to focus on a particular sound which I really love.

  • Jackson And His Computer Band Radio Caca

When I came across Jackson and His Computer Band I was hooked. I loved how it was hard to listen to and required a bit of effort to enjoy. When I first heard it I didnt really know a whole ton of electronic music so this opened my eyes as to how far you could take it in the experimental sense.

  • Hudson Mohawke Polkadot Blues

This track was another eye opener for me. The rhythms in this track are insane. Wish he would do more stuff like this.

  • 813 The Whaler

813 is currently one of my favorite producers and this track is on of my favourites of his. Its all about those chord stabs and the harmonies in the vocals on the chorus. Powerful stuff.
