8 Tracks: To Enjoy Without Booze From Cero39

Music

Originating from Colombia, the duo known as Cero39 is made up of Mauricio Alvarez and Dario Sendoya. The pair have become one of the most interesting and enigmatic acts on the alternative electronic circuit. Drawing upon tropical influences they incorporate caribbean influences alongside sporadic glitches and chimes. Having just appeared at Glastonbury the pair are very much in demand and are amassing a reputation for their live shows. This month the pair released a new album on the record label Big In Japan which is titled "Mis Tierras Calientes".

We caught up with them as they select as part of our eight tracks series.

Mediopicky - Banda

Mediopicky is one of the champions of the emerging alternative Dominican culture. I met him in Santo Domingo and his music gave me a different perspective between debow music and his traditional songs. His lyrics ended up becoming like a hymn between all of our friends. The lyrics are: If we were clear, then why are you fucking with me, you should represent us and the the open development of our personalities. Accept us as we are, with our defects and qualities, but above all else, accept us with love.

  • Mula - Retumba

We collaborated with Mula on our previous single called la Cura which came out before the most recent EP, Mis Tierras Calientes which is out on Big In Japan records. Their lyrics are so fresh. This track is guaranteed to bring some heat to any day. I met them on the same trip as I met Mediopicky in the festival of light. Their melodies and their voices are some of the most interesting in Latin America.

  • Mitú - Solitario (Lyric Video)

Analog drums and synths unite to take you on a boat trip through the sounds of the rivers of Latin America. The use of traditional voices are the essence of the Colombian Caribbean which takes us back and makes us smile with our ancestors.

  • Tumbamurallas Lyric Video - Systema Solar

This is a re-evolution of the sounds that make you want to dance. Cartagena, the Caribbean coastal city in Colombia is known for its city walls and for evoking the sounds of salsa legend Joe Arroyo. This track makes us want to put our fists in the air and start working together as people united.

  • Las Cuatro Monedas-Pata Pata Glú Glú

We love the beat that kicks of this song. It has experimental textures the track transports us to the 50s and combines them with ska melodies which creates a really special combination which we love to work with as Cero39 too.

  • Kiko Mendive - Chinito, Chinito

I heard this track on on Radio Guadalajara and its the perfect mix of teriyaki and chillis! Its been interpreted by Kiko Mendive, one of the totems of tropical Latin American music.

  • Viva La Pappa Col Pomodoro - Rita Pavone 1965.

This song was our ‘despacito’ at the start of the year. You can put Rita’s dance with any kind of music behind it and it always makes you want to dance.

  • Sietecatorce - Noche

Marco likes to take us in journeys that represent caos and to give us a real taste of our beloved Mexico. We performed together with him last year when he was in Bogota. We are real fans of all of his material.
