Herbie Hancock - Rain Dance

I love the whole album by Hancock, and this piece in particular, for its experimental and avant-garde quality. The album hardly fits into any category, although in some respects it is close to the concrete-avant-garde experiments of the 1960s, the early Kraut experiments, or the electric period of Miles Davis himself. It was fundamental in my training process.

  • Billy Cobham - Spectrum

I discovered this album at a friend’s house, during my childhood. It belonged to of his elder brother’s record collection . I was literally struck by the rhythmic section. Since then I have never stopped listening to it. A milestone!

  • Suns Of Arqa - Ananta Snake Dance

Bought on a street market some time ago. This single from 1982 (Virgin Records) is an explosion of sound contamination, in particular “Ananta Snake Dance” from Suns of Arqa gives me positive energy every time I hear it. Acoustic Letfield / Dub with Delayed Flutes and trumpets and strings improvisations. What a journey!`

  • Flying Lotus - Hello

The debut album of Steven Allison. The tracks in the album exemplify a cross-breeding of styles and sounds, mixing electronica with black sounds and a unique, highly individual use of samples and synth. “Hello” is my favourite piece.

  • 4hero - Planetaria (A Theme From A Dream)

Album that points the way to the future “UK broken beat movement”. The influences are really endless, from jazzy & Refined session to D’n’B and Electronics. “Two Pages” is a work of a truly infinite class …Fundamental!

  • Afrikan Sciences - A Healthy Turnaround

This album is a must for forward thinkers, trying to define Afrikan Sciences’s music is a extremely hard as these artists refuse to get pigeon-holed. The approach has a jazzy feel, A Healthy Turnaround is my favourite, minimal and so essential, reverbed piano on an hypnotic rhythm part… sheer magic!!

  • Nu Guinea - Exotica Dance Club

Amazing record, full of afro, latin, asian and funk contamination. Disco stupendo, pieno di contaminazioni afro, latin, asian, funk.

Exotica Dance Club is a very special track, a kind of sound that resembles Japanese funk from the 80s. Dream atmosphere, pads, lo-fi leads and DX7 piano chords!

  • Yussef Kamaal - Black Focus

Comprised of keyboard player/producer Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu) and drummer Yussef Dayes, the duo are rhythmic improvisation incarnate!

This is the kind of record that inspires new listeners to explore unfamiliar sounds and musical histories; the kind of record that bodes very well for the future of British jazz.

    Always in my Bag!!
