8 Tracks That Wont Leave My Head! – Wall Of Sound

Music

Having spent 21 years at the helm of Wall Of Sound, Mark Jones can feel satisfied in a job well done. With over two decades of giving artists a platform on which they could create the music which they truly wanted to, it seems as though now is the time to look back and admire the work that they've done. Here, Mark plays a little fast and loose with the term '8 Tracks' and gives us nine tunes that he can't seem to get out of his head.

In the words of Mark himself: "Where there's a Wall there's a Way!"

Two Culture Clash Feat. Jacques Lu Cont And General Degree - ... And Dance

When we recorded the album Two Culture Clash ten years ago peeps just freaked out. Taking key electronic producers to Jamaica and putting them in the studio with key Jamaican artists. It was way ahead of the game. Major Lazer were inspired by this I do believe đŸ™‚ This track is Jacques Lu Cont, of course.

  • Reverend & The Makers - Heavyweight Champion Of The World (Official Video)

I met Jon in a toilet and we had a chat/shat. The debut Reverend album really kicked in and broke the band here properly. Heavyweight lives with me day and night. Sheffield is my second home.

  • Grace Jones - Williams' Blood (Aeroplane Remix)

The amazing Aeroplane remix of Williams Blood was voted remix of the year all over the place. So inspiring to bring Grace and Vito together as one. I did actually propose to my wife at Secret Garden Festival when Grace performed this track. It came up on main stage screen… ARE YA GONNA BE A JONES ? YA GOT TO BE A JONES! She said yes.

  • Propellerheads Feat: Miss Shirley Bassey - History Repeating

The word is about… There’s something evolving… Getting Shirley Bassey on the Propellerheads track was a real moment in the label’s history. Peeps again just freaked out on first hearing. The video is one of my faves too. WoS Top of the Pops…

  • Kids On Bridges - Walls

The Wall of Sound fanniversary theme. There’s never been a Wall that I can’t get over. Kids on Bridges combine musical genres and melodies brilliantly and deliver live every time.

  • Zoot Woman - It's Automatic (Official Video)

The influences that shone bright on from Zoot Woman captured me. Releasing ESD – an Electronic Steely Dan – was something I’d always wanted. This track is timeless and the chorus is stuck in my head 24/7.

  • Les Rythmes Digitales - (Hey You) Whats That Sound ?

Taken from the second LRD album Darkdancer. I got death threats and hate mail over this album as we dropped it in the middle of BritPop and certain peeps hated the 80s electronic inspiration. Stuart Price has obviously gone on to be the one of the biggest producers in the world and it really is one of my proudest moments, finding and signing him.

  • The Human League - Night People

Said this a few times but they say “Never work with your heroes ” but I thought “Fuck that”. The Human League were the band that made me do this. Their evolution and history and effect they had on music is second to none for me. Night People is my dream sound and sonic.

  • Röyksopp-Poor Leno

Royksopp are the biggest selling artist in Wall of Sound history and have never compromised their artistic and musical being. I found the original demos that I was given from them the other day too which captured my mind. Melody AM will live with me, and a lot of other people, forever… And ever.
