8 Tracks: That Kept The Fire Burning – Booma Collective

Music

A lot of good things have stemmed from Canada: maple syrup, poutine, ice hockey and gender equality within politics. Underground music has been steadily pouring out of various cities around the country: from Mood Hut in Vancouver to 1080p and Pacific Rhythm there has been a real surge in activity within the scene. Booma Collective are a group of artists based in Montréal. Their recent release is a compilation of tracks which capture the atmosphere of the intimate parties the crew threw in the city between 2012 and 2014: an ode to late nights in small rooms.

Some of the crew told R$N of the inspiration and music behind Booma, and what has led them to where they are as a team today..

Laurie Spiegel - Drums

Solpara’s Selection: When I first heard Laurie Spiegel’s music on a college radio in my friend’s car, it was kind of a huge revelation musically. The radio host played the reissue of “The Expanded Universe” record in its entirety. This track has a special rhythmic and hypnotic quality that may take your mind somewhere else if you block everything else out. If you drop this in a DJ set it can also bring the energy of a room into a new headspace.

  • Bryan Eno & David Byrne - Moonlight In Glory

Oren Ratowsky’s Selection: This album was formative for me. When i was maybe 12 or 13 my father gave this CD to me. At first I found it too weird for my childhood ear but slowly it started to grab me more and more. The vocal samples, the sound of the synthesizers, the screwed up rhythms: psychedelic but also a little bit awkward. I never get tired of this one, and whenever I revisit it, I hear something new.

  • Paul Trafford - Rubicun Iii

Blueshift’s Selection: From our talented friend PT, a solid airy track, released on Temple records from Parc avenue, Montreal. Look out for their stuff, it’s the bee’s knees.

  • Keith Tucker - It's Time

Hugo B’s Selection: Keith Tucker! What else is there to say. Come on, it’s classic. I would have also gone with his Erase The Time (Bass 2000 Mix) from Brace Yourself but I couldn’t find it on Youtube.

  • Polygon Window - Quoth (Wooden Thump Mix)

Valentin Stip’s Selection: I remember the first time I heard this song and went totally nuts to it. Only Aphex Twin songs have that effect on me, like the first time I listened to 54 Cymru Beats in my house in Montreal and was head banging my bed and jumping off the walls. Yeah, that guy is really amazing.

  • Constellation Botsu - Botsu502

Arabie 82’ Selection: Astonishing, relentlessly powerful, raw killers or adventurous trips into unknown territory – Highly Recommended.

  • Peder Mannerfelt - Lines Describing Circles

Valentin Stip’s Selection: I decided to read what he had to say in interviews after I recently acquired the III record which I found completely mesmerizing. I then read up about his interest for tribal music, which I greatly share, and decided to delve into his whole discography. This one album in particular, Lines Describing Circles, got me hooked. The guy’s amazing, it’s one of these beautiful moments when you find an artist out there who is already doing what you are striving for as an ideal endpoint. Enough said probably.

  • Mecanica Popular - Siempre Tu

Lorenzo’s Selection: Classy mixture of ’New Waving’ synth work outs. On-the-point 1990s US House school.
