Rory Phillips’ 8 Tracks Of Gomma

Music

The excellent Munich-based music and graphic design collective led by Mathias Modica (aka Munk) have been releasing beautiful pieces of audio-visual goodness for the quite somet time now. Musicians, DJs, bands, graphic designers from Germany, France, Italy, UK, Denmark and the USA, they're descending on Dalston Superstore this weekend for a takeover.
Gomma alumni Rory Phillips takes us through his top picks from the label from the beginning of the imprint’s history to today…

Sexual Harassment - If I Gave You A Party (Syrup Version)

Probably my first introduction to the label, as part of their Anti NY compilation of No Wave party classics as well as remixes and covers, like this inspired take on Sexual Harrasment’s classic.

  • Starter - Part Of You

An unlikely-yet-totally-makes-sense-when-you-think-about-it peak time hit at Trash. From Gommas Teutonic Disaster 2 compilation of German New Wave.

  • Munk "Live Fast Die Old" Headman Remix

Great remix by Gomma mainstay Robi Insinna, who will be along again shortly. Played endlessly at Durrr during our years at The End.

  • Box Codax - Choco Pudding

Oddball side project of Nick McCarthy from Franz Ferdinand, video also includes superpal and one time DJ partner Ronnie Danzig filling her face with Choco Pudding. They did a great live instore at Phonica a couple of years back.

  • Los Amigos Invisibles & Dimitri From Paris - Glad To Know You (Ray Mang´S Flying Dub)

Another cover version, Dimitri enlists Venezuelan disco band to cover the Chaz Jankel classic. Never fails.

  • Headman - It Rough (Chicken Lips Trax Dub)

One of those classic records that was played by everybody across the board. It turned everyones head upside down in 2003, and still sounded as fresh as ever when reissued a decade later.

  • Munk - Keep My Secret (Rory Phillips Club Mix)

    Because… You know…
