8 Tracks: Of Little Kisses with Pink Skull

Music

Julian Grefe is a familiar face and a familiar force. His output has been vast, sprawling if you will and his own tastes have helped define a narrative behind the specially crafted sound that Pink Skull has become well known for. Releases have appeared far and wide on the likes of RVNG Intl. Throne Of Blood Records, Days of Being Wild and My Favorite Robot Records.

Last month marked the release of a new EP on Timothy Clerkin's imprint Insult To Injury, a label which has moved from strength to strength since formation earlier this year and has received critical support. The EP showcases a fun focussed take on acid house and channels various influences into one tangible product purpose built for the dancefloor.

We invited Julian to guide us through eight tracks, little kisses if you will.

Daf - El Que (Video)

Have a wicked edit from June of this seminal tune. I bought this years ago from the Record Exchange in Philadelphia. The percussion really seals the deal for me.

  • Arthur Johnson - Perfect Stranger (Cosmo Vitelli Remix)

Great tune with a classy remix by the most excellent Cosmo Vitelli.

  • Nurse With Wound - Six Buttons Of Sex Appeal

Irritainment is legion. But here’s one of the more excellent layers of that cosmic onion.

  • Past Yesterday

I really love this tune, and the whole Ep. Shabby and fun. Something about this track makes me think of the Raincoats… I remember a Christmas dinner, at which a far older friend of the family tried to convince 14 year old me of the wonderfulness of the Raincoats. I wasn’t having it. I think I was mostly resistant due to his off-putting goatee and insistence on mid festivities Tai Chi. I have since changed my mind about the band.

  • Frak - Born Flexible

I love a wiggly tune. This tune has it in spades. It makes me happy.

  • Gavin Russom - Punisher

Extremely visceral. I love putting this on, but I hate mixing it. I think that Russom makes some fantastic and otherworldly tunes. A true original mind.

  • Skin Game

I’m particularly proud of this track. We had just moved our studio out of Justins place due to spousal irritation and into this cave like room in the basement of one of the oldest still functioning warehouses in the city. It was a great move. We became immediately more productive. The accapella was given to Skull member Joe Lentini by Ms Lorraine Sangre- off of some weird US Southern Gospel record. Geller laying down the XOX. 303, Drumtraks and a Proteus 2000- bare bones and to the point.

  • Old Man

In my formative years of dj’ing with mr Dave Pianka, we would often go back to his place, in the then vacant expanses of North Philadelphia ( Dave’s apartment was really great) and after hours. This was one of the records that would go on to occasionally scare off the hanger-on’s as everyone’s gakked up motors would begin to wind down- allowing for a rooftop sunrise hang.
